Perfect example of why to read the article, rather than just the headline. Lost on More Mesa? Are you kidding me? Oh. You aren't kidding. It's an elderly woman and her adult developmentally disabled daughter. Thanks to the hiking party, the jogger, and the cops for quickly making sure they were OK.

No one can get lost on More Mesa - it's not big enough, and much of it is developed. It would have easy to round up neighbors and/or our volunteer Search and Rescue Team to locate these people. This is a ridiculous excuse for Sheriff Brown to pad statistics on use of his helicopter and staff. We need to find out how much this cost, and realize that the crime statistics in SB don't justify our law enforcement expenditures, and that these people are continuously wasting our tax dollars to justify their jobs and budget. Brown is a megalomaniac and former president of the California Police Chiefs Association, a right-wing organization that supports law enforcement running local government, and will continue to waste as many $$ on this type of PR as possible to inflate the real cost of law enforcement. This was a 45 minute incident.

@403P: The mother was 78, the daughter was developmentally disabled. Those two factors alone are enough to warrant an immediate response of this kind. Take one scenario of the mother having a stroke and falling into the underbrush. The daughter freaks out and runs in the wrong direction trying to get help or just because she is freaked out. She may have been told to be careful about talking to stangers and not to knock on stranger's doors. She decides to hide because she is scared. (That is just one of many possible scenarios!) It is easy to see how a helicopter could shorten this length of this ordeal and be invaluable in finding one or both of these women!

403P- Had they not taken immediate action, and if either of these two women had a less fortunate outcome, you would probably complain that the Sheriff's office did not do enough. Thank you Sheriff Brown and staff.

I'm glad they were found safe and sound. Did they have cell phones with them? Using a helicopter to search for this pair was over kill. It was 1 or 2 pm on a fair weather day. It's not like it was sub-zero storm weather without visibility. It's More Mesa. A search team on foot or all terrain vehicle would have been much more appropriate...for a 17-year old or for a 78-year-old and a disabled daughter. They were in a relatively safe place, controlled access area...More Mesa. We aren't talking uncharted back country here. This is not a valid use of a search helicopter. Not at all. What if a real accident were to have happened while the helicopter had been out, diverted on this little More Mesa jaunt?

We walk around More Mesa almost daily, and there are many small trails and thick brush and trees- so i think the helicopter made sense. The horizontal visibility is obscured in many locations as it is not completely flat. Glad that the pair were found quickly.

Maybe they just wanted to check out the nude beach. Glad the helicopter got some run hours on a nice day.

One can easily get lost at More Mesa, especially while wandering near the creek bank along the interior edge. The trails there are confusing and it is pretty much a maze. When I first read the headline, I thought "what the heck?", then after reading the actual post, it seems like an appropriate use of our resources.

Good for Brown. He is well liked, a good man and definitely not a meglomaniac. If he does have an slight ego he has certainly earned it! And that's why he working hard this morning instead of balancing on the kitchen stool while aimlessly pounding out silly rubbish on his computer.

Seriously 423?? What if it had been your Mother or Grandmother and your sister? What a mean spirited rant. Show some compassion, early action may have saved them from a worse fate. My question, where was the leader/guide of the group taking the walk? Special attention to those who are more frail and fragile would have been most helpful to avoid this in the first place. Thank you for commenting, you hit the BULLSEYESB!

Looking at the condition of the hikers, since the Sheriffs Department has this tool why shouldn't they have used it? To the poster who asked what if a real emergency had happened? The answer is if something more serious was going on the chopper would have been diverted and since the aircraft was already airborne the response time to another incident would have actually been faster.

First, I agreed with the shock of being "lost on More Mesa." But I spent years there. I came to agree that these two needed assistance. What about the "group" they were hiking with?!?!? I think they should've been looked after by their *companions.* Then there would've been no need for SBSO/helicopter. But I have no information about the situation. I'm glad they were found and agree assistance was needed before the situation got worse.

BULLSEYESB: I'm a former Search and Rescue Team member and a pilot with fixed-wing license & ratings and helicopter time logged toward my license. I'm also physically disabled, and I'm also a former Long Term Care Ombudsman with probably better-than-average knowledge of the effects of aging. I'm a bit familiar with the amount of time necessary to do a preflight and get a chopper in the air and fly to More Mesa. People with developmental disabilities range from mildly impaired to very disfunctional - a friend of mine who is DD has her own business, but some people in this category might be frightened by a low-altitude chopper and might even try to find shelter from the noise and wind they produce, making them more difficult to locate. Local residents who are familiar with the area could have responded and searched in a much shorter time period. 416: Try some knowledge or intelligence - they frequently work better than emotion or $$. 498: I work at home on my computer as an independent contractor. How about u?
