They will open May 1st. Scolari's moved their 4 stores out of the state to focus on their business in NV. The Milpas store was bought by Nick Tompkins, not connected in any way to Fresh N Easy. There was a good article on the SB View on this Thursday.

Fresh & easy is a great store. There are a few of them in Ventura County. Best way to think of it is a Trader Joes Meets Vons. Only thing I don't like is most of the time you have to bag your own groceries.

606: Part of the reason their prices are so low is because they don't pay someone to put your things in a bag for you, which is actually pretty easy for anyone to do themselves.

The Lompoc Fresh n Easy is nice. It's great for buying small quantities and they have great bread. The really discount items when they want to move them.

Well, that helps to explain why Scolari's made the decision to close. I'm glad that the Eastside community members without cars will still have a reasonably priced grocery store on Milpas.

I'd like to speak up for supporting stores that do not have "self checkout" lines. I went to a Fresh and Easy in Palm Springs last year, and I think all their checkout lines are automated. (Not that hard to figure out but it takes a few minutes, so there is a learning curve that could be frustrating for some.) But anyway, my point is that used to be someone's job, and it used to contribute to the community economy. When you use an automated checkout all the money goes to corporate headquarters, which in the case of Fresh and Easy, is England. Support good jobs for local folks.
