Thank you for the alerts,Roger. One has to be awake and observant when on the crosswalk. The crosswalk at the top of De La Vina is a nightmare. I always make sure the cars coming in both directions are in sink before attemtping to cross. Then I run like hell! Or as fast as a 77year old in pretty good shape can! I hope that poor women will be ok.

Why did this woman step in front of a 5000 pound truck? The driver is probably back in TJ by this time, so he will not be punished. It was a clear day when she was hit. The pedestrian should have easily seen the truck. No doubt there will be people screaming about the pedestrian's "right-of-way" but what good does that do this woman? The SBPD has been conducting crosswalk enforcement operations throughout the city. Their efforts failed to prevent this accident, so what good did SBPD do for this woman?

@455: Motor vehicles move a LOT faster than pedestrians. The truck may have been nowhere in sight when the woman entered the crosswalk. I've had this happen: you enter a crosswalk when traffic is clear, and then a vehicle appears from a side street or driveway when you're partway across. You can only hope they'll stop in time, or that you choose the right direction to retreat if they don't.

I support the crosswalk enforcement effort precisely because we continue to experience accidents where drivers mow down pedestrians in crosswalks. If you're driving in SB where there are pedestrians, sidewalks, and crosswalks, then you better darn expect pedestrians and cyclists. If you are driving a 5,000 lb vehicle, it's all on you to be extra-cautious and careful. Drive like it's a mine field, because it is.

272500P: Why do you think SBPD crosswalk enforcement is reducing accidents?

@455 - If you read the alert sent out by SBPD a car stopped for her and she proceeded and when she enter the other lane the truck hit her. How dare you try to put fault on the victim. Read, learn, think, then speak.
