Nope; it is a severe data manipulation for the coastline at a 90 degree angle towards Goleta to be shown in the background here. Yep, that is what happened.

My husband was out sailboat racing yesterday. He said it went from cloudy/foggy to clear as could be and back again to stormy. He said at one point Santa Cruz Island looked like it was about 10 miles offshore. The weather can change so quickly here that this scenario is not unusual at all.

I was at the Breakwater yesterday and there were tons of clouds, we couldn't see the islands at all but the ship was a ways out and there were shuttles going back & forth bringing the tourists in and then they were catching shuttles on Cabrillo and going shopping and out to eat on State Street. Some of them walked downtown. There were TONS of people getting off that ship to check out our city, very good to see that! What time of day was the shot taken? We were down there from about 10 - 1 and it was super cloudy and then was pouring on us on the way home, seems like it wouldn't have been clear enough out yesterday to get such a clean shot!

Forget about the photo and Santa Cruz island. There is a huge monstrous ship, way out of scale for our harbor sitting there. With all the bilge water problems of ships, it should not be there. I don't think the economiic benefit of having visitors out weighs the harm it can do. What if it sank like the Costa Concordia in Italy? We would kick ourselves for not now putting a stop to these cruise ships arriving in port.

358...There's no way this was taken from City College. That is clearly the Californian Hotel at the bottom center of the photo. And right in line with the hotel is the elbow where the Breakwater ends and the little isthamus begins. I looked at a map and drew a line from the elbow to the Californian and extending it northward (actually NNW heading approx 349 degrees), and this line goes right on top of (from lowest elevation to highest) the S.B. Bowl, Brooks Institute, Franceschi Park, and Skofield Park. My guess is that this was taken from up on the APS near the Brooks Institute....am I close?

Beautiful photo. I use Photoshop on every photo I take, nothing wrong with that. If Charles used it, great work!

BEAUTIFUL! I wondered if the picture was taken from City College since it looks like picture is from a high area. If those are the islands, what a great shot! Thanks for posting.

Even long ago, the islands looked very large after a rain. Something in the atmosphere. Although capturing the islands with these remarkable cameras makes the image more amazing. Another thought, I love that the tourists come to town despite the rain! They've heard about the shopping (curious). Rally 'round the tourist dollars! SB needs them!

My mind says it has to be Santa Cruz Island, but for some reason it does look like the bluffs between Goleta and Gaviota. It could have been Photoshopped in. CHARLES CRONINGER, I know you said a 300mm shot but was there any photoshopping going on??? Any way that you look at it, it is one incredible shot!!! Thank you for posting it.

Love the compression a long lens can get you. 291P... it's easy to get hoodwinked by such optical effects.

No 310. Just a depth of field / focal length adjustment that gives this effect. You ever see "Jaws"? The scene where Brody is on the beach, the kid on the raft gets attacked, and the camera does a dolly zoom on Brody. Looks like the background is rushing towards the camera. Same principle. The person that took this picture probably has a nice camera.

Forgive me but it sure looks like that island is out of scale. Could it be a superimposed shot done with photoshop? It just seems too big to be a natural, un retouched photo.

291P - Wow...that's news. I work in Goleta, and I never realized that M-F I had to travel due south, 20 miles over water to get to my job. I must have one of those remote controlled amphibious vehicles. Of course that is Santa Cruz Island. Camera is pointing almost directly south...perhaps a little SSE. Trying to guess where the picture was taken from. Seems much to high of an angle to be the court house.

Those are the bluffs of Goleta and Gaviota - not Santa Cruz Island.
