Bottom line......don't get drunk!

I find it amusing that one anonymous person calls other anonymous people "cowards". Takes one to know one, I suppose?

If you are so drunk that you can't walk that is a medical emergency. The sheriff doesn't want anyone choking to death on their own vomit in a holding cell.

Also they want to make sure that it is just alcohol intoxication and not a possible drug overdose or other medical probelm as well.

Roger you make excellent points about the bottle fed and burped drunks in this town.

Reading over some of the some responses I think there should be a check box on our local and state tax forms that says: I would like to add extra money to be taken out to cover the expenses of sending emergency responders to care for the passed out drunks and also to cover their medical services at local hospitals as well as the coverage and tip for the taxi. Problem solved.

As much as locals complain about all the bottle feeding, burping, babying of the transients in our community, they keep voting in politicians that continue to support this transient welcoming agenda. If nothing changes. Nothing changes. Come on Santa Barbarans. Let's make some changes.

SHOREBIRD is right. There have been deaths in the tank. Two years ago sadly a much loved school principal died in there. I guess to prevent further problems it is better to be sure than sorry. My heart goes out to the Emergency room techs and EMR. My son worked an EMR whils putting himself through college. The experience turned him off drink for life!

As someone who works at the ER, this can be very frustrating on a busy weekend. These people need basic care to be sure they don't aspirate - but in a busy ER situation, they take up an already scarce monitored bed because we can not personally babysit each one for the 6 hours or so that they tend to stay.

I remember a wile back when I had my station on Milpas it was common practice for the homeless ( that weren't allowed in the Casa ) to wait until the weather was getting bad and they would have there friend call 911 for them and they would lay down in the bushes till AMR would come and take them away. I would see them later and ask why they did that and do they realize how much that cost ? They would say, they don't care what it cost , the State pays for it and they did it because it's going to rain , there not allowed in the Casa and this way they get checkedd out by a Dr. a nice bed and a shower for a day ( if they could think up something that would keep them there longer ) before the PD picks them up to do there time in jail ( they wait till they have a few warents before they do this ) I've told AMR and the PD what they said and how they were before the call , they just said that they know and there hands are tied !!!!

12 (TWELVE) calls were dealing with Transients/Street people- I would venture to guess 90% are not from Santa Barbara... Wake up people! Call Cam Sanchez and Helene Scnieder (Police Chief & Mayor), tell them enough is enough!

72% of the Fire Dept's calls are for medical emergencies. Probably 80% of those are for homeless drunk down or overdose calls. Some large percentage of those homeles are from out of the area. WE pay for ALL of it. The FD budget is $21m annually. Go ask your mayor and silly council EXACTLY what the SBFD costs are to service the homeless population, and don't listen when they tell you these are 'our own'. SBFD and SBPD know the truth. They're silenced by the council from telling the taxpayers.

Yes I find it quite amusing that awhile back I not only identified myself but posted my address also..I like my nick name better...:) If you so drunk you cannot walk it's an medical emergency, why? It never was for me..Why now? And how come there could not be a "Drop in Clinic" Staffed by employees of Homeless Inc. Like the Drop in Center where drunks can get checked out on the way to jail. How come the only hospital in town has to take them in it's not big enough to handle the cases it already has..It would save money it would free up alittle time for other medical cases. Why do things the hard way? I mean I know that Homeless Inc. might have a problem with it since they seem to be drainning the cities resources for their needs and wants....What was the principal in jail for? Wasn't it something involving a 415? Fight or something?

Unfortunately Roger, most people are "binge drinkers". So technically imbibing more than a few drinks in a short period of time is an "alcohol overdose" thus a medical emergency.

If you could prevent people from suing the SBPD and SBSO for drunk detainees dying in jail cells then that would free up some space in our ED's.

Commenter 264926 - "Probably 80% of those are for homeless drunk down or overdose calls."

You are PROBABLY grossly overestimating the statistic.

I don't think@926 is grossly overestimating the stasistic I hear those calls go out all the time..I guess I should list them more often..It's just the same old business around here different day.. At least 10 grand a day goes to code 40 drunks..The only people that care are the taxpayers..Rest assured those employed by Homeless Inc. Will come back with some defensive manure everytime.. Will gee I was never taken care of suffering all those alcoholic overdoses I had making my brain good and mushy who do I sue for not bottle feeding me and burping me..?

YOU liberal dems (most transplants from other areas who attended school at UCSB/City College), have changed our town. Hope you are satisfied with the "chronic homeless" outreach programs, housing, detox, social services (1000's of public employees) that support your liberal cause of attracting the "homeless" to Santa Barbara!

@Rodger ~ as usual, I pretty much agree with you on the ER situation. Doesn't the city have enough funds for an urgent care to be open 24/7 aimed at drunks, homeless? If not, why not? It's not exactly a poor city, beautiful yes, poor no. They could use some of the released inmates (that were trained while in prison ~ at the taxpayers expense) & make part of their release into halfway houses a requirement to work there & then put a good portion of their wages toward what I'm sure is past due fines. I know, I sound synical. Guess after seeing the news report on lifers getting unemployment this week got me to thinking, never mind totally p.o.'d. Have a great day Rodger (you little anynomous person you) & Happy St. Pat's day should you secretly be Irish as well as funny! 'Tis, Deborah

Having grown up in SB, I was hitting bars and IV by 16 when the HS parties where lame. That was 15 years ago, and if you were drunk and stumbling the cops would call a cab, take you to a sober center, or let a buddy walk you home. Now the cops wait outside nightclubs and anyone stumbling an inch get's picked up. I rarely drink, but SB is set up for partying and occasionally getting drunk with the college pop. Unless you are hurting someone or yourself, leave them be is my take. If you fall drunk and need medical attention you deserve an arrest. If you pass out on State you should get arrested because it is not a campground. As for the homeless, leave them be, they drink in isolated spots, and unless they cause a scene, defecate in public, or fight.Anyone who wants to drink has that right, if you are drinking to get drunk every night you may need to figure out why, and address the problem.

@254 We are talking about the ones that make a scene.. If they are laying out where the public can see them that is a scene. Because people call the police they either want them off the street, or have them checked to see if they are still kicking..I'm not talking about the ones that hide in the bushes and don't bother anyone. I used to do that 20 years ago. I had some good times hiding in plain sight partying...Thanks Deborah yes I'm pretty much either Irish or Russian Gypsy making the brisket tonight for me Un Ballistic Belinda and Pooh Bear..Happy St. Patricks to you also.
