This "bas relief" sculpture and the other four or five in the Main Post Office lobby were done by William Atkinson as part of a WPA (Works Progress Administration) project in 1937. Atkinson was only 22 years old when he did this work. He grew up in Southern California and drew and painted from a young age. He was a Quaker and a conscientious objector. He went to Canada at the outbreak of WWII, were he died soon after.

Is there a way of printing the winners' names so they don't meander across the entire line; i.e., a way to make them readable?

Perfect place for Pony Express! Dangerous work for the young boys (often orphans) doing the mail delivery.

I can't see Pony Express in that mural. I agree with 841P. The format used for winners names is unreadable and very irritating.
