Roger - I feel the same way you do regarding the homeless.

Me too! Roger is right-on. There are thugs hanging out on State and Milpas. They're not mentally ill, not victims of th economy, and they don't need their feet washed. These are straight-up grifters, some with felony warrants, most from out-of-town. They need a swift kick in the rear, courtesy of SBPD. Citizens: do NOT give money to these people! YOU are the problem if you do. Help those in need by donating to the Salvation Army or Rescue Mission. Do not enable!

I am reluctant to quote "the homeless" for a large majority of the afore mentioned under this umbrella are trying hard to work and help themselves out of this unfortunate situation. No, the true disturbers of the peace know what they are doing and enjoy the feeling of entitlement provided by the leniency of our leaders. Clearly nothing will be done until there is a devasting incident to alert the city leaders to this growing problem.

As a lifelong resident of SB, know friends who became homeless, and others who made it. Most, not all, homeless are addicts or alkies, some choose to "travel." Bottom line is no one wants to be homeless, they would rather have shelter if they could. They, the homeless do not take the initiative to face life head on and have to hide behind their addictions because it is too difficult. I have no respect for people who do not try, who use SSI checks or food stamps as a way to get loaded. It is a haven for the homeless here because of the free resources and weather. A man I know named Joe, better known as Gonzo on the streets drank for over 30 years in SB, at 50 he decided to get sober, he took direction, talked out his past demons, and is now a changed man with a home and a new life. It can be done, if you don't try don't expect handouts and kill yourself elsewhere.

As a regular individual who has lived and paid taxes in this town for almost 50 years I think the leaders in this town are ignoring us and our concerns. Instead, blind to the crimes and incidents escalating, they stubbornly continue to cater to the people who cause the problems. What is happening to this town is a crime, and a tragedy for those of us who rightfully depend upon a safe and clean environment in which to live, work, and conduct our daily business. The holiday makers who loyally continue to visit and spend their money in this once beautiful and safe town, deserve a better welcome than a stroll up the street punctuated sometimes by a mugging, but usually by intimidation and begging, in what sadly is becoming an increasingly hostile, dirty and smelly environment for pedestrians.

More people should have voted for the North County Jail this is a big part of the problem..Santa Barbara County jail is busting at the seams..You can't expect the police to perform their duties with a jail packed full of people like sardines..

The bigotry inherent in these discussions is classic scapegoating stuff. If someone behaves criminally they should be subject to the criminal justice system process. If someone is homeless they should considered in that light. Being homeless does not make one a criminal. Being a criminal does not make one homeless. The constant co mingling of these two separate concepts is based only on the bigoted assumption that being homeless is being criminal. The good burghers of the community apparently can't deal with the simple idea that people should be judged by their acts and not their economic circumstances--especially if the ones being judged don't smell good, have poor clothes, act a bit strange. It is much the same as the town signs that existed in our country about 50 years ago prohibiting certain races from being on the streets after sundown.

@655 I think you are alittle off key I report what I hear on a police scanner. The termology of the police when seeking a suspect discribes them from race, sex etc..The discription is what they are looking for..As fart as the homeless thing I'm talking about the criminal element within the homeless community..I have alot of friends that are homeless and not only do they know I'm Roger many of them agree with the way I write.. There is some racism on this board many of them get deleted. Spare the lecture I am doing my yob...
