Oh, sorry, it's the dad you were looking for. Well, the "yada yada" part reads: [Earle A. Donze] moved here with his parents, Eugene and Hortense Schoffin Donze, in 1895. For a number of years [Eugene Donze] was the only engraver in the city. He established a cleaning business at 1033 State St., and later owned a grocery store at the site of the more recent service station. [His] sons, Earle and Leon... started an electrical company in 1906. They were the first to introduce tungsten lamps to Santa Barbara. It is believed that they also did the first complete conduit wiring job in the city for a local milling company. [Eugene Donze] directed the Santa BArbara Military Band for three years. {He a] also collected stamps and his collection was known throughout the state. And there is a half-page on Eugene Donze in the book by Owen H. O'Neill, History of Santa Barbara County...Its People and Its Resources (on p221 of the second half of the book). You guessed it - available from the Reference Desk of the SB Public Library, 40 E. Anapamu St. 805-564-5604 Among other tidbits O'Neill's says: "Among the former well known and successful business men, as well as highly esteemed citizens of Santa Barbara, none stood higher in public regard than the late Eugene Donze, whose death occurred on November 10th, 1932." He was a Democrat, a Catholic, and was affiliated with the Independent Order of Foresters. There might be an obit on the microfilm of the daily SB newspaper in the library. Free!

Thank you for this wonderful post and for the subscriber contributions about the Donze family. I lived a block or two from this street for over 10 years, and loved biking or walking down Donze to the Market, enjoying the quaint artistry of every house on the block.

That "one block wonder" happens to be part of a several block area known collectively as "Bungalow Haven". It will be the focus of a walking tour conducted by the Pearl Chase Society on May 20th.
