I spent Thanksgiving with relatives in Turlock. They raise hay. Turlock still has many, many dairy farmers as well as many almond trees.

Please don't make demeaning comments about life in the Central Valley. You claim to have lived in Porterville for two years, but that doesn't qualify a person to claim that they "know the Valley". I was born in Turlock and spent many years there. I currently have relatives in Fresno so I'm there frequently. I can say that while its not Santa Barbara, there are many rural experiences in the Valley that outsiders just couldn't understand, or feel. There are many honest, hard working, friendly souls in those places that deserve the same respect as people in SB.

Without trying to be provocative, i'm just saying that when I read this account I didn't feel defensive or superior. I was just happy to know more about a place I know almost nothing about. To 7011 - I'm sure you're right, and that there are a lot of wonderful people in the Valley. I appreciate the hard work, solid values and loyalty farmers and others who live in the Valley have...I grew up in SB and have no reason whatsoever to feel superior to the people who live in the San Joaquin Valley, or any place, for that matter. What I do care about is the integrity of the person and his/her level of happiness and personal pride. I think you might re-read the story from a non-emotional place and then see if maybe you were a little quick to judge the author. If you read it from a neutral place and still feel the same way then I'm sorry for your pain. I often champion others who society turns their back on so I can identify with your feelings of injustice.

I lived in Fresno for 4 years and have to say ... I ran back to SB. However, I thought it charming in my first few weeks. Just an opinion. I'm sure there are people who like to live there. It's fine. I do not.

I certainly wasn't being demeaning. I grew up in Santa Maria and am always interested in agricultural areas.

It looks like it was a 'clear' day (no ground fog). It would have been great to see a stunning photo with the Sierra on the horizon, but alas, those days can be counted on one hand in this era. Too bad, it takes your breath away. I racked up my Valley Years in Visalia, Woodlake and 3 Rivers.

I am a native Fresnan transplanted on the Coast. After having retired from teaching for 35 years, many of them in 4th grade, I am still proud of our rich agricultural part in the history of the state, and the geology and geography about which I taught. Our native American tribes were integral to the trade from the coast to the Sierra and over into the eastern regions, their routes still maintained as highways for current residents' travel. Why am I on the coast? Sharing some retirement years with my husband, I may return to the valley because of the cost of living, available health care, and my kids and grands who are benefiting from having a beautiful home and great educational and recreational opportunities there. All of Central California has been discovered as a great destination!

The only reason I will ever visit Fresno again is for a Grizzlies game. What a miserable place.
