Now it is used to jail and cage animals for our enjoyment.

Enough Zoo-bashing, please. Can there be any mention of the zoo without nasty comments? We get it. A small minority of outspoken folks don't like zoos and won't be persuaded of their value by reasonable and factual (and polite) arguments of their value to the community and to wildlife conservation. Got it.

A special thanks to the gardeners at the Zoo for maintaining and adding to the beauty of the plants and trees. Think about this when you visit the Zoo and enjoy the landscaping as well as the inhabitents of the Zoo. Many animals are there for their protection and wellfare.

Confessions of a hasty photographer and writer. My ever vigilant colleague, Randy Baldwin, General Manager at San Marcos Growers, politely correct my plant identification caption. Here's what he sent along... "Hey Billy, Nice job with the zoo on EdHat today. Not sure if anyone else will catch this but I am pretty sure your Senecio mandraliscae in the image with Kalanchoe, Crassula and Euphorbia is actually Cotyledon orbiculata var. oblonga 'Flavida' – what we used to call Cotyledon teretifolia. The leaves are flatter, longer and a little less blue than the Senecio and you can still see the old dried inflorescences. Happy Holidays, Randy
