I have a neighbour who forgets the lights in the tree out front and they stay on all year round.... only at night of course. Ironic that it was General Electric that sponsored competitions to use more lights and electricity during the holidays. I wonder how much of that competitive edge is what drives many households to outdo the Joneses or just to keep up with them since the "lighting spirit" is focused in certain neighbourhoods.

Despite your enthusiasm for football, I love sports too, hanging lights is a celebration that sometimes I don't understand but do it. If someone in your life, kids, wife, wants it done it is time to man up and take a Saturday and do it. If it brings them great joy, so be it, get it done and then you can watch a few games in return. I personally enjoy walking with my dog and girlfriend around different neighborhoods in the evening and see how elegant some houses are. In my mind it creates a sense of community, brings the spirit of the season alive, and gives you a chance to meet and compliment new neighbors. You don't have to try and top the neighbors, just throw up a wreath on the front door, do a few rows of lights on the exterior of your home and you should be fine and have done your part. Don't be a Grinch and ruin everyone's enthusiasm around you, learn to enjoy it, you could be living somewhere where there is nothing.

I love the pattern on the red bulb. It looks like a strawberry. The incongruity of such an iconic symbol of summer at Christmas is amusing.

My son-in-law says he grew up deprived of Christmas lights, so ours are up already. Not an over-do, merely an enthusiastic application to various eaves and carport lines. This house came equipped with light-hanging hardware, which makes it easy. One of my favorite displays ever was on a large, slanted roof in Grover Beach some years ago. It was an outline of Santa and sleigh with a circle-and-slash superimposed on it. Nothing on the rest of the house. Might be a good theme for next year, Mr. P. ;:-) Me? I'd have a few fairy lights up in our trees all the year 'round. And Japanese lanterns.

Good news. Now that the lights are up and I've had time to ponder them, I'm not so grumpy and bah-humbugish. But I'll probably whine again next year. ;-)
