Come on Roger, it is quicker to say PUFF rather than P H F. just like we say ER instead of emergenct room or NICU (pronounced nic u) instead of neonatal intensive care unit. Look it up PHF is physchiatric health facility. Call it what you want, I was educating you.

Hey Roger, good work and funny commentary. You really got to get out more man, and not just to Norton's. Anyway I think this time of year the crime rate always goes up as people need money for whatever, so be extra safe all, lock your cars, be more aware of your surroundings, take pics on your cell of crimes in progress and report it to police, and just use common sense. If something looks suspicious it probably is so play safe. Also hide your Christmas presents in safe areas, and please DO NOT drink and drive. This time of year can be hard and emotional for some people, try to surround yourself with supportive people and if you drink call a cab. Have a great Wednesday, what a great start as the sun is out early.

Roger, it's called "puff" by those who know it because it's easier to say the one-syllable "puff" than the three-syllable P-H-F." Of course you can call it anything you like, but don't get angry when people who DON'T know about your refusal to spell it right also don't know what you're talking about. Just sayin'.

We did not have a scanner guy in the past and there was always crime in this town that never came to the public's eye. Petty thieving, burglary drunken brawling, even a stabbing or two etc. .

It's called "Puff" by those who don't respect the work it does or the people it serves. That degrading phrase should be banned by the staff and professionals who are in charge of the place. But they don't seem to have the sensitivity to do this, wonder how they serve the patients?

Geeze Louise!!! Some of you guys are so so sensitive. I already know it's PHF.. puff...puff..like puff the magic dragon...Some of you sound like you need alittle thorzine yourselves.. I'm still going to call it PUFF because that is the way I hear it..Personally I don't respect places like that not from what I hear and from what I have personally experienced. I never went to PUFF but in County Jail I was in this room that had grey walls and a sewer in the floor to do your business in. How many people have died in puff in the last year? That is another reason why I can't respect the work that is done there. I enjoyed the lifestyle back in the 70's when parents decided to "Look out for number one" And dropped their kids in places like that. Many of those children walk the streets today homeless and mentally ill. Awhole generation of bread and butter for the business. No one can't tell me Mental Illness and Homelessness is not a business..It's so good in Santa Barbara the powers that be have almost abandoned the Tourist Industry..Besides the mental health and homeless industrys add alot to the business of justice. I don't respect that kind of work to me it destroys more lives than it helps. Many of the people that work in the business mean well sooner or later they realize what they have gotton themselves into. Either they quit and go somewhere else or continue to take the money and keep their trap shut. I really don't understand why the SO has to show up and help put people in restraints, or help control them. Is there a full staff at PUFF? Now some of you might not like what I've said here but it's ok I can live with that.

We've decided that we don't like the name Roger, so from now on we'll call you Robert. Of course, a lot of people won't know who we're talking about, but that's perfectly fine because WE do. Hey, call it PUFF, POOF or Trader Joe's if that makes you happy. It doesn't seem to matter to you that SOME people won't know what you're talking about. This has nothing to do with being "sensitive," it's about responsible news reporting and confusing your readers.

Roger, if you have never been to PHF, how do you know it is so bad? I was there 2 years ago. Had I not gone there, I would be dead now. Sometimes we need to be locked up and yes...put it restraints if that is the only way to keep us safe from ourselves or even more important to stop us from hurting or killing someone else. I would never want the thankless job the people at PHF have but I am thankful they were there when I was hell bent on killing myself and anyone that tried to stop me.

all of us in the field of working with mentally ill and unstable people call it PUFF - if you pronounced the PHF that's what it might sound like. So yeah I am not sure too many people who work with or around the PHF are offended.

Call me what you want I'm sure there are those who will continue to call me Roger either way it is no loss to me I'm sure I have been called much worse..Alot of people know what I'm talking about when I say PUFF because that is what the dispatchers call it on the scanner..I would never call it Trader Joes..Trader Joes is a good place at Trader Joes they don't tie someone down in 5 point restraints for hours on end, beat the HELL out of them or fill them with meds..Sooner or later they die so what the HELL do you care..? Love Robert PS em tae.

Agreed--it's PRONOUNCED "puff," but it's SPELLED "PHF." I don't see what's so difficult about calling it by its right name in print. Why this strong stand on DELIBERATELY misspelling something? This is a real question, as I honestly don't understand.

Those who won't open their eyes are never going to see. The defense of the "puff" pejorative is that the staff use that phrase. This is the problem. The word diminishes the seriousness of the situation. It is close to a joke, implying the facility if full of "magic dragons" who drift about in a soft cloud of meds. If they don't respect the job they are supposed to attend to nor the reality of the place they do it in then we cannot expect others to do so. Just because the master calls you "n*****" doesn't mean you don't have a more respectful name.
