I have always loved Hale Park and never knew the history of it - plus I always thought it was in Montecito. Thank you for the tour and interesting history lesson. Fun!

Thanks again. Parents live on Via Alicia and I will call them so they can read this too. Did a lot of "firsts" at Hale park thanks for jogging my memory.

Do you have any plans to turn this project into a book? It's been interesting to read and learn about local lore.

Interesting history - wish this had been parceled into smaller chapters. And also wish there were a prettier fence for the Montecito Country Club - seems odd that there's a common chain link fence there. Thanks for your stories.

Thank you, Urban Hikers, for pointing out all 93108 zips aren't in Montecito. The Real Estate people keep that myth going because a Montecito house will bring more money. They advertise "Montecito homes" nowhere near the community line (it's one of my pet peeves). Graholm, which Brooks called their "Montecito Campus" is not in Montecito, the line marking the community runs behind it. The Santa Barbara Cemetary is in Montecito. The honest defination of Montecito can be found on a map at the Montecito Community Hall. As for Billings' horses, I never heard he named streets after them. When his stable was demolished (after his death) and apts built, the developer named "Lou Dillon Lane" (off Salinas) and "Uhlan Place" in honor of the most famous of Billings' horses. Where are the streets Billings named?

Urban Hikers here - Well, 970, we never thought our hike project would turn ito a writing project, but it seems to have evolved into that...so at this point we are considering something. Not sure what yet, but we love SB, its history and as you mention, its "local lore". We'd like to help preserve it if posssible. And regarding FLICKA's question, we guess we got that wrong. We didn't realize it was the developer who came up with the idea to name the streets after Mr. Billings' horses - we thought Mr. Billings was the one who came up with that. Thank you for the correction. And yes, we have walked both of those streets, from top to bottom.
