I love that surf shacks, or any beach shack, is really a piece of art, hand built for a greater purpose. I see sculpture when I look at these.....thanks for sharing!

If the "environmentalists" have their way, we will soon be living in huts like this.

Yes mr. 866 it is the future. The Occupy Wall Street victims want you live there. They want your stuff, and they want you to minimilize your life. Its time to reverse the fortunes. You give them your house and stuff that you have worked for and you then go move to the beach and live on less. Some might call that redistribution of wealth, some might say that is not class warfare, that it is destiny because the eagle flys with the dove. Ah such kindness from the Democrats! Bathe in it for just a moment. As long as they have more than you, as long as they can spend your money for their causes, as long as they can feel good about themselves......then you should pay for it. One driftwood shack at a time. Koom-bye-Yah! Now get busy. the state needs more of your tax revenue.

I wasn't expecting all the fervor over my simple surf shack photos. I'm with Aquaholic on this one...I see the surf shack as an alluring, artistic piece of art that serves some menial utility. Nothing more. Good or bad, I find some of the other comments to be an interesting perspective on the current state of our world.

Whether for shade, shelter or storage, these surf shacks are incredible.Surfers are artists at heart, reaching for the sublime. And who is to say that creating from natural ocean castoffs is not sublime? I hope the creators of these shacks enjoyed them and got some good waves to remember.

These pictures are wonderful. Makes you just want to go find one and climb in and take a nice nap! Of course, you could put a picture of a rock on this site and someone would find something political and gloom doom about it. Life is really hard, but every now and then it's great to pull of the boxing gloves and just enjoy what's out there.

I love surf shacks. I hate people who take a totally unrelated topic and try to turn it political.

Awesome shacks. I wonder if there is an area around here to do one. Some sort of gypsy colony that wasn't over run by transients. Would be nice to have a secluded spot to take the family or friends to and have a shelter.

012 you've got it right in my opinion. I've seen some awesome beach shacks at La Conchita beach over the years. That beach seems to be more "live and let live".

221140, the big shack is nestled near the Russian River. We stumbled onto it while kayaking the California coast.

These are temporary, beach-y versions of what we found in "Wood Butcher's Art" all those years ago. Thanks!

Up in N. California where I grew up, we used to build beach shacks to protect ourselves from the cold winds and to keep sand from blowing into our picnics. Often we'd get lucky and find one that just needed a little fixing up, and we'd fix it up and move in for the day. Trips to the beach up there aren't for sun and surf. It's foggy and cold and rocky and there's a killer undertow. You go to the beach for tide pools and shells and sand castles and you get all bundled up and build a shelter and make a fire behind the windbreak and make smores. There's a lot more driftwood up there.
