I had a friend who worked in that building in 1983 as an operator. As goes the building so goes America. And empty shell gutted of jobs. Ok bummer comment over, an on to what matters: The UH rock!

What a delightful journey...there are so many fascinating nuggets in this town...are we fortunate or what?

This was my favorite Urban Hike yet! Loved all the pics! So many great little architectural treasures in this town. My 2 yr old son looked up at the top of the Verizon Bldg once and said, "Look, Mommy, a drum!"

I wonder about the significance of the dragon motif on the light fixture. Much of the decorative iron-work hardware at Casa Del Herrero includes a similar motif. Does the fire-breathing dragon allude to the blacksmith's forge?

It appears that not only the devil but much charm, history, thought and remembrance are in the details. Thank you for your detailed exploration of what is right under our noses--it is edifying and deserves our gratitude and accolades.

Was Ed Boreins last place in the El Paseo? I remember visiting there with my dad who considered Ed a frieind of his. No longer live in S.B. but enjoy keeping in touch. Will be visiting in Oct and will be interested in seeing the changes.

I think it would be great if these Urban Hiker posts were assembled and published in a book. Perhaps after all 256 miles have been walked?

Has anyone ever been inside that Verizon building? It almost looks like it could pass for a retail store...at one time.. Curious what the inside is like.

A great post as always. I was on jury duty recently & loved exploring the courthouse on breaks. I still have not taken the tour which is supposed to be very good. How sad about the Carlos Cota Adobe.

Loved all the courthouse details; makes one wonder about all the details that hide within other city buildings! Like Santa Barbara High School, for example, has some very inconspicuous and beautiful detailing! Thanks for a more detailed look at your already fantastically thorough walks!

Great shots as always, thanks. 4 & 5 show the old Santa Barbara Home Telephone/General Telephone/GTE/Verizon building at Canon Perdido and Chapala which still houses central office switching gear and microwave towers on top, used to have many employees too but they've mostly been downsized/outsourced/automated or sent to Irving, Texas.
