I usually wear my clothes until they are begging to be given away. Or my friends are dropping hints.

Even if shoulder pads come back in style, your old suits will look wrong. The style will be different. Time to listen to your hubby . . . I'm a wife whose husband still has pinstriped 3-piece suits in the closet. It actually creates an unbelievable amount of marital discord. Let the stuff go.

It's time to say goodbye -- you can always donate or recycle -- old clothes when you no longer enjoy wearing them.

I agree, donate them, though you never know who will end up wearing them -- true story: a few years ago, I cleared out some things from my closet and donated them to a charity that runs a thrift store. A few months later, my husband and I went to see a play at Circle-Bar-B and one of the characters was wearing my dress! Good thing it was a comedy, because my husband and I couldn't stop laughing.

I just concluded a major weeding of my clothes, and it feels great! I have much more room, the Alpha School was benefited, and now I think I may do it again because now that I can SEE what I have. Room to play! Of course, some worn and comfy clothes have a place, but they should be few and treasured.

Good places to donate, IMO: Catholic Charities on Haley and the annual Starr-King Rummage Sale, typically held in October.

I know it's time when I look in my closet and find things I haven't worn in a while. I say to myself if I can't recall wearing a particular item within the last year it goes to Alpha Thrift.

Split the difference. Get rid of the shoulder pads and the sports jerseys. Neither are flattering, then or now.

If the clothes are in good condition and they are from known designers, sell them on eBay or Etsy. Use the money to take your husband to dinner and donate the rest to your favorite charity. Win-Win situation. Good Luck.

Hang all of your clothes with the hooks facing out. As you wear them, place them back into the closet with the hooks facing in. After 3 or 6 months...check to see what you have not worn, move them out of closet to garage or unity shoppe. Good Luck!!! Oh...this can go for your hubby also!

DONATE them to any organization. You'll have a great feeling inside after you leave the facility.

Put the ones you haven't worn for a while in a bag and put it in your car trunk. After a while you'll realize they are not worth having around and drive by a charity thrift store and drop them off. This method takes some of the pain out of any separation anxiety.

Keep only the ones that have sentimental value. Don't forget The Rack at the Music Academy if you have fine clothes to donate, or even nice clothes in good condition. Raises money for the music students. Once I donated something to them and THAT EVENING I saw someone wearing it to a concert. I've got a couple garments I wore in Bali in 1983, shabby, even torn, but I cannot get myself to throw them out. So leave a bit of space in your closet for those items.

Not sure if this is helpful, but I had some older clothes, some that would safely fall into the category of "vintage" that I didn't think would be useful to our homeless folks. So, I contacted the drama dept at UCSB and donated some lovely coats, a beautifully beaded evening gown, and some 60s skirts and sweaters. I like the idea of these clothes having a second and third life on the stage.

I agree with all the comments and have tried the turning hangers in and out, but truthfully, I wore a dress to church I haven't worn in years and that happens a lot when they are simple styles. Plus I accumulate new things that accessorize with the old clothes.

Donate to Assistance League on Veronica Springs Rd. All work is done by volunteers so their charities get well funded. Several of the 'thrift' shops are for profit.
