I escaped from Van Nuys in 1971. First to the Bay Area, then here. Must be a horrible place to live now.

A cynic looks for the bad in everything, even recycled art. You, Billy, are a realist. No candy-coating issues for you, thank goodness. We need more people functioning as court jesters, able to tell the truth. You are a marvelous contributor to your community.

Hi Billy -- thanks for the feedback on the festival. Couldn't do much about the crazy-hot weather, but I can comment on the corporate exhibitors and sponsors. Our approach is that as a community event, Earth Day is open to any organization or business that wants to promote an environmental or healthy lifestyle message. Everyone was screened in advance, some were rejected, and all were asked what items they would be distributing (with emphasis on products made from recycled or sustainable materials). We ban plastic bottles, plastic bags, balloons, etc, but a few exhibitors brought items we hadn't pre-approved. (I'll have to check whether the frisbees were made from recycled plastic.) I'm personally OK with grocery stores promoting organic products and reusable bags, banks and investment firms promoting socially responsible investing, etc. But this is a community event and we want to hear what others think. Thanks again - Sigrid, CEC

Here is an Edhat article from last year's Earth Day that hit upon similar themes to Billy's article.

It seems like the few of us that REALLY get it have to just keep hammering on the rest of them until they understand. One of the best ways we can do that is by example. Ride your bike, hang your laundry, re-use things till they die, etc. etc. STOP BUYING THINGS!
