I got to stand up for my Veggie of the Week guy here. The quality of writing on Veggie of the Week is first rate. I believe that in particular instance his choice of words was stylistic. It is playful, poetic, and perky.

Bad writing 101. Much better would be "December being a time of traditions, ..."

That's a doozy of an opening sentence: "December is traditionally thought of as a traditional time of year..." Really?
