Your piece is no more accurate that than the CNR report, which is garbage.

Just a couple of points on the article--it's only partially true that the Prius gets better mileage around town. In my case, I almost never drive more than 5 or 10 minutes around SB/Goleta, so the car doesn't warm up and gets 38 or so mpg. Once it's warmed up, my freeway driving averages 45+ depending on the hills. The value of the Prius for me (and maybe for some others) is that it gets good mileage while having very low emissions (PZEV rated) and is exceptionally roomy inside--big enough to stick 3 surfboards with 3 adults. Riding solo in the carpool lane is a nice privilege (especially in rush hour traffic heading through LA/OC), but not an especially big deal. As to the life cycle study supposedly demonstrating that an H3 has a better environmental profile than a Prius, I don't think the study would survive peer review and be accepted in a professional/academic journal (I'm an editor on one). Having done LCA work, I am skeptical of both the methodology and the numerous assumptions that were made. The Prius is not an ideal vehicle and in my view doesn't fit in the category of fully green (as it and every other nonhuman powered vehicle have significant impacts across the life cycle), but it's a start.
