something i've always wondered about feennell: if you grow it, when is the base best for eating? They get quite large. Are they still good when they grow big, or only small( like you see them in the store) Is the large 'weed' (to use a pejorative term) in my backyard the same varitey of fennel that is sold in the spermarket? If so, it can be quite invasive!

I'd imagine the base is good eats at any time. But when it gets bigger, the outer layers will get tougher, and you'll need to peel them away. The inside should still be fine as it looks to have indeterminate growth.
