"(perhaps figurative)" - that got a good laugh out loud from me. I like this article. Foodieism, if I understand the definition as given here, is something I have also encountered, firsthand, in a few people. The allegory drawn between the Foodieist and the tourist does a good job in giving a visceral understanding of a Foodiest. It is curious how Foodieists engage in "display(s) of dominance" with regard to subject matter of which they have only a tourist's point of view. And, as you wrote, the same thing goes on with clothes, cars, and a lot of other stuff. To offer another allegory to explain this phenomenon, consider the player vs. player mentality. The PvP mindset is fed by the rush from racking up player kills(PKs) and the lust for an opportunity to declare "owned!" over the opponent. I suppose Foodiest PKers would be good to have around when you are on the same team and going into some kind of Foodiest battle. But, so far, they have not made pleasant lunch buddies for me.
