Lots of things are more interesting if you're involved, than if you're just observing. I'm usually a Fiesta grump too, and about once a decade is my 'try it again' pattern. I figure I'm leaving for more room for others to enjoy it.

I was one of the original flower girls in 1949 and I'll never forget it. We wore off the shoulder "peasant" blouses and our gathered skirts were made of *crepe paper*! We marched down State St. instead of up, and by the time we got to Cabrillo, the heat plus exertion had stretched them out to the point we had to hold them up so they wouldn't fall down around our ankles. What a mess! We handed out flowers along the way, saying "Bienvenidos Convidados" to the onlookers. What a change today.

David, I'd be happy to take over your grump position if there is a vacancy. I just avoid town altogether. Sort of like preparing for an emergency, or the Film Festival... stock up early and stay home.

Your friend doesn't know it, but I named a black Manx cat after him. Someone in Carpinteria was talking about him and I just thought "What a GREAT name!" and so for years I've been pleased to have a cat named after someone I envision as a spry old Carpinteria guy.

Lucky 777, Nilo IS, in fact, a spry, busy, energetic guy and a great friend. I like that you named your cat after him.

Love your story, AUNTIE S. Are there any more 1949 original flower girls still in SB? You girls should have a carriage as a parade entry, so you don't have to hold up your skirts. I, too, did parades down, not up, State St. My worst disaster was a strapless bra I'd borrowed from my mother.

Thanks much for the story Born again Fiestan ! As I have posted several times this year, Fiesta can be a great time if you really get out and get involved in the activities. I was born in this town and was in the Kids Parade, I have rode in the parade and this year I attended almost every event I could and plan to hit the courthouse this PM for the great closing concert. Armchair critics of Fiesta bore me and frankly if thats there attitude Im glad they stay home.

The best thing about the Fiesta is that the police allow bikes to ride down State Street Wednesday right before the parade. Since there are no cars and the streets are blocked it's the best ride down State I've ever had! Also, you can ride to the staging area on Cabrillo which is fun to see everyone getting ready for their big reveal.
