Love your inventiveness. "Let's give this a try" I predict there will soon be an iPhone accessory that will allow one to stick the phone on a train or car window (suction cups?). I tried to take photos from a train in May as I sped through the French countryside. Indeed, you can only get pictures of whatever came right AFTER a great shot -- or go with the random shutter click method. Sometimes it works.

Great shots! I was driving the same route last week, and tried to snap a few pics from the car...gave up as they were all blurry!!! (oh, and I was driving!)

Wow! Those are fantastic! I'm impressed that your method turned out so well, and how fun it must have been taking the pictures and then looking through them for the gems.

Great idea, and thanks for the photos! The B&W conversion makes everything look vaguely historic, and actually reduces the uglitude of some of the industrial stuff. I've Amtrakked it up the Central Valley, too, and wished most of the way for a camera, if only to record a phenomenon I've observed in my lifetime: where once one saw mattresses dumped out by the tracks, there now seem to be more and more sofas. Outside of Fresno I have seen a yard full of the containers in which transit mix is rotated en route. Stacked separate from trucks, these things looked like cocoons. Also outside of Fresno, a yard full of the beige plastic cases from computer monitors. A stack of lenticular clouds over some geologic feature in the area of (I believe) Sacramento. Men herding cattle on horseback and one on an ATV. Much to see.

I'm with Louray, the black & white photos made me think I was seeing 1930's WPA pictures. Very nice!

I've always wanted to take the train on this route. Did you have to transfer to a bus for any portion? Great shots. I've taken the train from Seattle to SB and it's a blast! I loved looking at my pictures when I got home. It was like taking the train all over again.

Wahine, I made this trip from the Pismo Beach area, and there was some bus - - I don't remember exactly how much because there was a scheduling problem, with tickets re-written at SLO, and so on. It was a holiday weekend, and college graduations, and a generally horrible mess - - not my choice of dates, unfortunately. Look up Amtrak online and you'll find schedules. I've also found personnel very helpful in person and on phone, though it's been a while, and everything changes. BTW the Amtrak buses I have ridden a couple of times were way better than Greyhound I used to use to get to Sierra in Summer. There are buses and there are buses. Hope that helped. :;-)
