Kayakers must be a breed apart. We were lunching on the Outer Banks of North Carolina some years ago when a pretty young woman passed by, dragging her kayak and belongings. She was paddling solo around the US, beginning in Seattle and headed for Maine. A hardy German, wouldn't you know. Seemed to be enjoying herself.

David, thank you for sharing your adventure with us. But this is just a tantalizing morsel, are you and your friends considering a book? Some of the photos are beautiful and interesting, I would think you have many of spots that most of us never see. I recall there was a project some years ago to photograph the whole California coast line from a kayak, I don't know what ever happened to that. I do remember that some owners of private property along the coast objected. Thank you again for letting us share your exciting and moving adventure.

Wow, that's impressive. I have a large fiberglass touring kayak since I primarily live in the Pacific Northwest (where you don't see sit on tops since the weather sucks) and find them to be much more comfortable for long trips. If you want to try some new spots, rent one and try the San Juan Islands in Washington or Tofino in Vancouver BC.

David, thank you for sharing your adventures with us, I am so jealous. As a 47 year old woman, don't think my body would hold up to it, but wish I had learned to kayak when I thought about it just out of high school in 1982! Your trip looks like it was amazing. Thanks again!

Thanks for sharing your favorite areas. Quite an accomplishment. I'm always impressed when people set out goals like this and work at them steadily over the years.

I like my Necky SOT. I find it much more comfortable than a sit-in, where i have to have my legs stretched out pretty straight. Not comfortable for me. Whereas the SOT allows me a bit more freedom. I was happy to see that the Gaviota to SB leg was one of your favorites, as this is the only area I have kayaked.

Not having paddled to even a small percentage of the locations you have, I am green with envy of your group's adventures, David! However, even kayaking from West Beach out of the harbor can revitalize, energize and and bring a fresh perspective to the individual. . . there's nothing like looking back at our beautiful city! I think everyone should rent a kayak and try it at least once! Our Channel Islands offer great possibilities for enjoyment (but try the harbor first). And, kayaking amidst the San Juan Islands is definitely on my Bucket List.

Thanks for the nice comments. I'll send in some more photos of the adventure in another article soon. Kayaking the San Juan Islands is high on my list...thanks JJ and 902 for confirming that it's a place to see.

What a wonderful journey. Beautiful pics too. I just got a SOT as the sit in was so restrictive for my hips. I was worried about going into the ocean - you just gave me reason to set that aside and get off the rivers more often. I just turned 66 and have been kayaking 3 years steady now. I would go on this adventure anytime. To that youngster of 47 - don't strip your sights of anything - stay active forever, perhaps a bit slower, but the enjoyment is compounded by stopping to smell the roses. Strength comes as much from the mind as from conditioning.
