My son and three and of his friends were staying in the cabin that was destroyed by that boulder ~ seeing this photo again gave me goose bumps and brought tears to my eyes. Their stuff is still in that cabin. Their cabin is actually a cabin behind the one in front here and it is completely destroyed. They were in sixth grade on a class trip when the rock slide hit at 730 am. Thankfully no one was seriously hurt, one boy needed staples in head and lots of bumps and bruises and nightmares for kids in the weeks to come. The first thing Yosemite staff did was teach the children what to do in the event of a rock slide so when they heard it coming they all knew to run for their lives ~ literally!! They evacuated the kids and they all were home 9 hours later, many barefoot and pajamas still on but safe. Always take the time to know how to be safe ~ it saves lives and this was a good reminder! Stay safe this 4th

373P: Sorry if I dredged up some old emotions - I was pretty amazed when I saw the destruction left behind by a nearly three year old event. I wonder why they haven't cleaned up? I do have a few more photos of the 2008 slide remnants. If you would like to see them email me and I'll send them. Eric emi@emiphoto.com

Any recommendation for cabin rentals in Yosemite? I've never been there and have no idea where to stay. . .

I went with a large family group that stayed in Curry Village - They have soft sided cabins where they provide beds/linens and a bear locker (food storage) but no cooking allowed. You can save a lot of money going with a plain camping site where you bring your own tent. If you want to spend more you can stay at the Ahwahnee Hotel (I think its around 400-600/night) with very classy accommodations. Visit their web site and click on accommodations for more info. link Its a spectacular place to visit, lots of great hikes and buses for those who don't want to wear out their shoes :-)

No problem :) seeing that boulder on their cabin is a good reminder to count my blessings. They have actually cleaned up a lot and I was shocked to see that. I know they closed those cabins off for months afterward even to the Park Rangers because they were worried about how unstable everything was. About a year after the slide they sent some things they were able to get to,to the school.... 1 hiking boot, a moldy jacket ...random stuff! ANYWAYS..... You really got some beautiful photos and I love the ones of the wildlife too!!! Thanks :)

The BEST place to stay in Yosemite Valley is the Housekeeping Camp. Its on the river, each unit sleeps four, you get a large patio and picnic table, electricity for coffee in the am. About $80 a night and sleeps 4 comfortably or add a cot, and make it 5. Close to everything, its the only place you can cook your own meals, unless you want to slog it out in the tent camping area. Small camp store and awesome showers! Most people see the Housekeeping Camp sign and think its for park employees but its for US!
