I always liked to go to garage sales even though I did not "need" anything. My favorite find is a large pettie point framed picture that says "Laughter brings Sunshine into the home" with the whole alphebet on top and the borders surrounded by flowers. It cost me $.25. I was heartsick that some sweet person had done this beautiful large project and probably gave it to a loved one, and it was now being discarded. I found it fit beautifully on a wall entering my kitchen in SB and could be seen from my front door also. What a greeting for people. It is now in my little kitchen here in Mexico, and cheers me daily.

Damn you, David! YOU are why I can't find many abalone shells on my beach walks. You even posted the evidence.

Totally relate. For me it's driftwood and pebbles, seaglass--and shells on the right beaches. In New Zealand, I got a stiff neck from looking down so much.... Abalone shells the size of my thumbnail, perfect ones. Inland, for me, it's feathers, bones, cactus wood. Hopeless.

Sounds like the raw materials for assemblage art! If you ever want to "donate" you stuff to an artist who works specifically with beach detritus, contact Laura Lynch of Santa Barbara. Good stuff!

I too have loved beach combing since I was a child and have collected all manner of things. I also give back by picking up plastic, metal and glass trash on Hendry's beach every day, and it is much cleaner this year than last. Clearly there are others who are helping to make this a pristine beach. Take some treasures from the beach, but please take some trash as well.

My cousins would lift and inspect some treasure and ask their dad, my Uncle Don, "What's this one, Daddy?" His answer was invariably "Leverite" - - as in "Leverite there." We have carried on the tradition, but of course certain things are truly irresistible. I'll say no more.
