Every wildfire is now a conflagration...the reason? Environmentalists who over the last 30 years, refuse to allow prescribed burning of our forests. The number of trees on each acre is completely out of proportion, add to that the tree litter and duff on the forest floors is fuel that is not allowed to burn.So folks, thank the tree huggers for the decemation of our forest lands and wild back country.

You're blaming environmentalist for a policy that has been in place since the missionaries forced the natives to stop burning the grass land and scrub. This policy was put in place to allow cows to eat the grass and scrub; not to save the environment. The policy against fire was later picked up by the Forest Service who embodied it with our beloved Smokey the bear. Again, environmentalists had nothing to do with it. take your prejudices elsewhere.

For a very interesting look at how our forests have been mismanaged since the turn of the 20th century (and before, for the East Coast forests), read 'The Big Burn' by Timothy Egan. Solid reporting and excellent prose. A horrifying yet typical stew of graft, greed and corruption that created the mess we're in now.

I wonder how the environment managed before either the Native Americans or later immigrants arrived. There are theories and theories, and then there is this theory: http://thinkprogress.org/romm/2011/06/12/243065/climate-change-video-connects-the-dotsrecord-arizona-wildfires/#more-243065

Thank you 253P. People always feel the need to control everything. We continue to take whatever we want, overuse our resources and overpopulate the earth. Because we think we are entitled to do so, we have managed to displace, endanger or outright cause extinction of much of our natural world, all the while claiming that we are superior because we have the capacity to reason. Seems to me that we have more capacity for greed, corruption and control! Start thinking about the end result and consequences thereof and maybe we can start to heal the wounds we have inflicted on our precious earth.
