If he feels the same about you, it won't be a big deal - but I would use the conversation of the funny e-mail to let him know about all your critters.

Invite him over to meet the cats. Cats are psychic and will know if he's worthwhile of not. If they don't like him, or if he pretends to be allergic, tell him to get lost. It would never work out anyway.

Why hide anything that you love? Perhaps you could tell him before he comes over...and then when he comes over and meets the cats he will see how wonderful they are and why you have them, and fall in love them and love you even more and you will all live happily ever after.

Well, you missed your opportunity to tell him easlily when the topic first came up. But, now just tell him, and see if he gets along with the cats. Many people really dont like cats, and 7 is alot. Seems like it is time to see if he really could be the one.

Joyful -- Why are "7 [cats] a lot"? I am earnest in asking why 7 seven cats may be considered too many, but 7 of something else is acceptable. People collect all sorts of things. Where is the line drawn with cats? One is okay, two is fine, three is....?

shorebird--are you kidding? Three cats is just getting a good start! They keep each other company and eat lots of gophers. Worth their weight in gold in that department. It's the psycho dog owners you've got to look out for.

I don't know if you can or cannot make this relationship work, but having more than two cats is no indicator that you are "psycho". I have a good friend I've know for 40 years who, for the last several years, has had numerous cats, and she is quite sane as well as beloved by her sane boyfriend.

There is in one of Heinrich Boell's novels a poignant story about a middle-aged woman, never married, never in love, who finally meets the man of her dreams. But she has a cat (one only) and he is allergic/does not like cats and in the end she cannot give up her cat for the happiness she had dreamed of. If you need seven cats to feel complete or fulfilled, you don't need a relationship--people are a lot more demanding and difficult to deal with. You already have made your choice, accept it.

One of the benefits of online feedback is that we will tell you what your friends may not. You are severely limiting your pool of prospects by having 7 cats (or 7 dogs or 7 pets of any kind other than fish). 25% of people have a cat allergy so that knocks out some right there, plus honestly how does your house smell? How do you go on vacation? Even a 'cat guy' will think it's an obsessive number so look at this as an opportunity to reassess if making room for a man is a priority.

I don't know about your new guy friend, I have had horrible allergies to cats since childhood. With 7 cats in the same living space, I'd be catatonic from all the allergy meds I'd have to take in order to just breathe!

This town is to much! Can't people just love someone for who they are and not what hobbies or animals they might have... I am a handsome man who has women walk up to me and ask me out all the time... but once I tell them I am a single father with full custody of two boys they run for the hills!!! They want the handsome man standing in front of them but not the life... So if your boyfriend can't stand cats tell him to run for the hills!!! Because he might run into a girl just as shallow as he is, that I sent running that way! I love cats and so do my boys... I would date you and your seven cats no problem lol!!! Or anyone who doesn't mind children...! Hope all you Edhat's out there have a spectacular day!!!

256 Very well said... These are common sense issues and questions and they apply to seven dogs as well. Quite often the things we do that seem somewhat harmless and that make sense at the time, end up having a huge impact on where we end up.

182166 - cats are living things, not some "thing" to be collected. That said, if you love your cats and you don't find them too many or too difficult to care for, then hold out for the REAL one. The one who loves you and your cats.

The amount of judgment here is amazing. Sounds like a lot of people here are just undateable. Seven cats doesn't seem unreasonable as long as the OP has a clean home with happy well-cared for pets. And anyone who chooses to love me must love my pets too. My animals are well- mannered, and my house is clean. I guess my choice to own pets would knock out animal haters and those with allergies, but so be it. I wouldn't date them anyway (I'm happily married by the way). Hoarding is a psychological condition where people collect every animal they see despite their inability to care for them all due to some other issue in their life. It's not the number, it's how the animals are cared for and whether the person knows their limits.

I posted 182256. As a follow-up I'm not making a judgment as to your right to own your own personal zoo but I am nothing but a realist. When I was newly divorced at 40 (10 years ago) I realized that if you want to meet someone with all the bells and whistles, the law of attraction is that you have to be on a similar level. If you desire a man who's happy, balanced, fit, prosperous and sane, you better be all that too. (BTW, I met the perfect man who is allergic to cats but luckily I came baggage-free.) It may be time to get a life coach (some specialize in dating) to help you take a look at your lifestyle since the cat issue may just be the tip of the iceberg. Getting to middle-age is not an excuse for getting stuck in our ways.
