thanks for this informative article. the only thing i missed is how to pronounce "elings"--is it eel-ings, ell-ings or ail-ings? i've heard it pronounced different ways & would love to know which is correct. if any edhead has the definitive answer, please speak up & share. :-)

Dr. Virgil Elings became involved with the Park in 1999 and generously financially saved the park however, I am sure that Dr. Elings would want people to know that it is not accurate to say "The 230-acre park was donated by computer software innovator Dr. Virgil Elings". Jerry Harwin, In 1965 Founder and Visonary and others set out to convert the old city dump into the fabulous park that it now is. In 1980, the non-profit - Las Positas Park Foundation was founded and the fundraising officially started. In 1985 the park opened. Santa Barbara has been very fortunate that Jerry started the ball going, that the Godric Foundation and the Fleischman Foundation stepped up with the large donations in the beginning and that Dr. Elings came in at a critical moment - plus probably now thousands of other donors, volunteers and staff that played critical roles in taking this old city dump, converting it into a gorgeous park for the benefit of the community - all without any money from taxes. Signed - Someone who is proud to have had the privelege of being a part of all this.

"eelings" It's also inaccurate to call Virgil Elings a "computer software innovator." He founded Digital Instruments, which built and sold atomic force microscopes (AFMs). The company was bought by Veeco and then by Bruker.

Thanks for the historical clarification. I remember there was talk of putting in a community swimming pool too.

In the early 90's there were plans to put in a tennis and swim complex that would include a 50 meter pool. When the Jesuit Property - now known as South Park was purchased - the early development plan was to put it over onto the new property. It is my understanding that a tennis/swim complex is no longer being considered.

I would love to see another 50 meter pool in this town, and having a swim "complex" for the community would be invaluable. Los Banos is great, but the aging facility is the only game in town, and pool time is at a real premium.
