The airlines have allowed carry on luggage to become a huge nuisance. It has turned into a circus trying to get on and off the plane, while people block the aisle trying to stuff oversized bags into the overheads. PLEASE, don't be one of those people.

Having people pay to check bags has wreaked havoc in my opinion. And people who carry on way too much stuff are a huge annoyance and are rude. People need to learn to travel light. This seems like a made up question. The airline rule is one carry-on bag and one personal item like a purse. This person had way too much stuff.

Edda is right. This is a made up question. A cosmetics bag with shampoo and other liquids wouldn't make it through the TSA check for carry-ons.

I agree - Edda's always right, but the airlines really don't enforce the one carry-on and a purse rule with any consistency. It's unbelievable what some people carry on!

To add to the no-space-in-the-overhead-compartments-to-put-my-one-carry-on hassle, you've got to be in the early boarding groups to assure yourself some space. Good luck if you board the plane in the last group, find your seat, and expect to find space in your overhead compartment. Be first in coach or forgetaboutit.

I've carried make-up bags through security a few times (without realizing it). Also hair spray, etc. Forgot they were in my backpack. I blame it on the airlines. The only reason people carry so much is cause they don't want to pay the extra fees, and yes, it makes travelling more difficult. Another option is to gate check your bags. Works really well at SBA. You just hand your bag off to the person at the gate right before you board and avoid paying the fees and bothering your fellow travelers with your oversize bag.

People try to take so much stuff as carry-on because airlines lose luggage. 1 Suitcase lost for 4 months 1 bag delayed so I had to go to a business meeting in what I wore on the plane. Needed to hand carry documents so had to check bag 1 bag completely lost/stollen with business suits worth several thousand. 1 bag delayed on international trip 1 infant car seat delayed - so what do I do with the baby in the rental car? Numerous other delays on trips home but then at least I had clothes at home. They have told me that this is "on purpose" because the plane cannot hold all passengers and all luggage so they send the luggage the next day. I am one person so I am guessing to lost/delay rate is pretty high despite what the airlines claim.

One checked-in bag should be free. One carry-on bag should be free (yes, your purse or your briefcase). Charge for the rest. All those carry-ons delay loading and unloading. Airlines are charging the wrong passengers.

TSA....pfffttt, I have made it on a plane twice with my trusty swiss army knife mistakenly left inside my purse. Fake question or not, selfish/cheap/rude people bring too many things onboard and then expect everyone to wait for them coming and going, plus hog all the overhead bin space while you get left stuffing your bag under the seat in front of you...rrrgghhh. Agree with 744P...the airlines are missing the point, and needed revenue.

After having my checked bag/s "lost" numerous times & watching those tv programs showing baggage handlers stealing things from them I learned to always pack everything needed &/or favorite items in the carry-on bag. Whatever doesn't fit goes in the checked bag. We try to get by with one checked bag for both of us. My biggest complaint about flying is that the "rules" are not enforced equally from one change of plane to the next. My carry on got checked 4 times at SB airport along w/extra body search ? The subsequent airports had no problem with my bag. I try to avoid flying whenever possible.

Take the train! No baggage fees, plenty of overhead space--especially on the Pacific Surfliner trains that go north to SLO and as far south as San Diego. And the amazingly beautiful Coast Starlight train that goes from SB all the way to Seattle even has a baggage car for large items.

elkay--I tried to find my way by train to the east coast--it would've taken several days (4) with bus links and hours-long layovers in the dead of night. Train travel is unfortunately no longer anything more than casual excursion travel. I agree the coast trip is a delight.

I always check my bag. I travel with very little and always carry on my camera equipment which is exempt from count as a carry on. Yes the TSA says photo equipment is not counted as a carry on (but check with your airline).

You definitely took too much because I get stopped for having my roll-on suitcase, my backpack and my purse. Often they will let me through but there needs to be room in my backpack to stuff my purse if they ask because it is technically two items only. Therefore your suitcase and garment bag would be that. If you had put your make-up bag into your suitcase and had a place for your purse, then that would have been fine. Note: Make-up bags are fine to carry on as long as everything liquid is at or under 3oz. You can carry any liquid you want onto the plane as long as it meets this requirement. You also need to be able to pull these liquids out in a clear plastic bag so they can go through security separately.

049: All those liquids need to fit into a SINGLE clear ziplock (quart size) baggie. You can't just pack everything liquid in various bags, it all has to fit into a single bag - so it's a bit more restrictive than just the 3oz limit, unfortunately. 774: I think you were 'randomly' chosen to have an extra search. I had this happen a few times to me. I had *SSSS* printed on my ticket, they had to hand search through all my luggage (checked & carry on). Also, I once had a major issue with my bag when they put it through a number of time & just kept scanning it. Finally I insisted on taking out a few things - I had both a cd player & a camera (non-digital). Apparently, they both have a 'laser' in them, and they only expected one (in the CD player), so they just kept scanning rather than ask me to empty the bag a bit. Taking a few things out makes it easier to see what's in the bag, so next time, bag within your bag so you can take a bag of large stuff out so everything scans easier.
