...warning: lovely when blooming, messy-looking otherwise, and can be very invasive forming massive stands which constantly travel by underground runners, searching for sources of soil moisture. Like your lawn. Not for suburban yards with loose soils.

I second SEEDLADY. I had some in my hard clay soil and they spread like crazy. Getting rid of them is not easy!

You're exactly right Seedlady. The underground shoots spread everywhere. When we bought our house, the Matilija Poppies had taken over the entire back yard. It took some time to get them under control.

My favorite Native Plant bloom. They are at the Patterson USPS landscaping and at the CEC on the Mesa, of course trying to spread...My mother liked the Jacaranda trees in bloom, which also can be plants to clean up after. Great photos David. Thanks to all the photographers bringing nature to my condo by the freeway and railroad tracks.

Seedlady: THANKS! I adore Matillija poppies, but as a novice gardner, it's nice to hear things like this. I have made planting mistakes in the past. Still learning!

I LOVE matilija poppies...Now that I know what they can do...I'm going to try and find some to plant in my front 40...which is a hard clay/sandstone weed patch...They will fill all the voids and then some...thanks Seedlady!!
