Another fabulous segment. As a fourth-generation resident of Montecito I can say that this is really special.

My parents came to Santa Barbara in early 1948 to scope it out as a place to move to from the East Coast and one of the first places they ate was the Pink Cricket. It made such an impression that when they got back home they told my sister and me about this cute little pink restaurant where they had a delicious dinner. A few years later, on graduation night from Santa Barbara High School, my date and I had our celebration dinner there before a night of partying. The photo brought back happy memories. Thanks again for your wonderful articles.

I grew up on Hermosillo Road and it was my understanding that The Pink Cricket was on the corner of Butterfly & Coast Village, the beach side. I worked for a couple of weeks one summer at the motel across the street(the Pink Cricket was long gone; it burned down, I think). I wish El Camino Pharmacy was still there. I too hope to buy your columns gathered in a book someday.

The numbers on Old Coast Highway/Coast Village Road changed several times it seems. I had a very hard time trying to match things up for my Then & Now slide show (and forthcoming book). The Pink Cricket was at 944 which later became 1111, the address it had when it burned down in April 1955 (thanks to David Myrick for the date). At that time the Bermuda Restaurant was at 1096. The Somerset replaced the Bermuda and the Bank of America replaced the Somerset all still carrying the 1096 address so the current 1111 should be the same spot or fairly close to the spot. This puts it just up from Butterfly and Coast Village Road as SBJULES correctly recalls it. Thank you Stacey and Peter for another well done hike and history. - Neal

Thank for sharing your trip with us. A resturant you mentioned was actually Bud's Blue Onion (not Birds). It had good food so the truck drivers stopped there. Coast Village Rd. was the Coast Highway when I was really young, that's why there were lots of motels and resturants (when relocated the highway was called the 101). Coast Village annexed to Santa Barbara because they promised to put in a sewer system. Montecito had a vote for a sewer (entire community) that was defeated and the businesses were desperate as their septic systems were a mess, overflowing, unhealthy and smelly. Another vote a few years later put all of Montecito on a sewer system.

I remember how excited my mother was when we got the sewer; Hermosillo got it the same time as Coast Village. She used to plant bamboo over the septic tank. My parents really liked the Somerset (I couldn't remember the name) and we had many family celebrations there. And I was not allowed to cross the highway without an older sister or brother. I think it was mid 50s when the freeway was built.

Thanks for another great walking tour recap with photos, and I'm very happy that you didn't restrain yourself from walking out of Santa Barbara on this one!
