Regarding the history of the bricks: I don't think this is a chimney. I think it is a gate support post. There used to be a paved road out to here extending from the end of Santa Barbara Shores Dr. and down to the beach. Maybe it was part of the neighborhood amenities, or from an old ranch. The oldest picture I could find was from 1972 on the Cal Coast Records Project site: link (click picture for large original)

Super source. Thank you so much Holazola! Going to share w/my brother who loves that area. History gives so much more meaning to our surroundings. It helps you connect the past and be mindful of the future.

I think it's what is left over from a housing development that never left the ground in the 1960's. It could have been an extension of SB Shores, but I think it was an entirely different project that never saw the light of day.

Aww, I am sad that my answer to this one apparently wasn't specific enough, especially since it's the only one I've actually known so far! :(

The "chimney" was a gate with a post on each side with a place to tie or snap on and off something to let in or out a vehicle- I saw in the late 1950s when I put in the long grass there at the request of the family owners who were donating the property. There was a remnant of a fence going both north and south that I was told by the family representative was boundary between the west(ocean) parcel and the east(trees) parcell. At the request of UCSB I put in the iceplant(their seeds) in the slough and I put the plants on the island. The iceplant there is what I put in but UCSB has recently said it was non-native and then changed that to them saying it was a native type they put in(without doing anything) to get a grant to study the plants in the slough.
