Thank you for another delightful tour of Santa Barbara. It is unfortunate that so many people fly by these wonderful sites and have no idea of what they are or why they are there.

A few answers to your questions...
You are correct, 1435 Anacapa Street is the former Christian Science Church. The building was originally located on the east side of State Street between Victoria and Sola at 1316 State.

The Post Office at State and Anapamu however, was not destroyed (it was barely damaged) in the 1925 earthquake and continued to operate as the Federal Building and Main Post office until the new post office was built at Anacapa and Canon Perdido.

2024 Anacapa Street was the Stewart home. In 1905 it became the Blanchard-Gamble School (named for its proprietors, Elizabeth Blanchard and Mary E. Gamble) and was a day school with a few boarders. In 1909 Blanchard left to operate a girls school in Montecito and Gamble carried on for a few years adding boys to the lower classes before selling the school to a group which led to the creation of the Santa Barbara Girls School at Constance between Anacapa and Santa Barbara Streets.

After the school left, 2024 became the Stewart Apartments until around 1949 when James W. Steven and his wife Stefanie took it over and it became the Steven Apartments. He died in 1962 and she died in 2007. It was one of the stops on my paper route when I was a kid and I loved going inside to drop off the papers in front of all the doors. It had a wonderful rich smell (no idea of what) and all the wood was original and unpainted showing its beautiful grain. It is one of my favorite Santa Barbara homes.

You asked what the word "Sabrient" means in reference to Sabrient Systems, the firm occupying the former church at 1435 Anacapa. It is a word the firm's founders invented meaning "the feeling one gets or the mindset one attains after becoming financially independent." There didn't seem to be such a word already. So, if you go on a major shopping spree with no regrets, you are feeling sabrient that day. - Scott M.

Re. "lovely Victorian" at 1376 Anacapa, unless numbering in SB has changed the correct address is 1334, catty-corner from Our Lady of Sorrows Church. This was the residence of my beloved grandparents, Dr. & Mrs. Adrian Burkard from approximately 1925 when I believe they purchased the home from two maiden sisters. The Burkards moved to SB from Omaha in 1915 and at first lived further down Anacapa where the Courthouse now stands. Dr. Burkard was known far and wide as "El Doctor Santo" for his Catholic faith and day and night availability to treat the poor before today's social nets existed. He was born in Bavaria in 1878, came to the U.S. at age 3, spoke German, taught himself Spanish in order to better communicate with his many Spanish-speaking patients. Dr. Burkard built an annex to the present building that served as his office, which was removed when the home was remodeled for use as offices. My father, Paul Burkard (1921-1967) was raised in this home. Dr. Burkard died in 1956, Anna Burkard in 1962. See SB News Press May 3, 1952. Ron Burkard, Oklahoma City, OK

Speculation about the Stewart House 2024 - the old map in city hall shows there was a lumber mill at the top of Anacapa Street so is it possible with all the lovely woodwork in this that home belonged to or was built by the Anacapa lumber mill owner?

Thank you again for your wonderful tour. Having lived in Santa Barbara for almost 40 years, I still find it an enchanting place and love learning new things about familiar sights. Please, please publish your tours in some kind of little handbook that could be carried in a back pocket.

I'm a relative newbie (2001) to Santa Barbara, and am thrilled that you have provided us with such a wonderful tour of the street on which my son lives in the 1700 block. I appreciate the clarifications of other posters, particularly Neal's - thanks to all.

I worked for several years at 1435 Anacapa when it was Grant Pedersen Phillips Architects. I believe they were there for many years. The basement was scary.

Neals Bells— you must have sneezed and missed 1010 Anacapa St., the Valdez House, oldest original building on Anacapa St. and home to the Santa Cruz Island Foundation. This shotgun house is on the original grade and is accessed by going up eight wide sandstone steps.
