I believe this plaque was designed by the artist Judith Sutcliffe for the Poor Clares. As far as the prayer it's known as the St. Francis Prayer. Although probably not written by St. Francis it was first published in France in the early 1900s. I love this corner of Santa Barbara.

Amazing how we see, without seeing. Thanks for bringing that fact to our attention. Maybe we will pay closer attention to our surroundings.

The wall was probably built in 1947 when the adobe wall for the Mission (on Los Olivos from Garden to Laguna and then up along the Mission parking lot) was built. The plaque covers a niche that for many years held a statue of Mary and usually a small vase and flowers. Continued vandalism in the 1970s led to the end of that tradition and the niche was filled in and the plaque by tile muralist Judy Sutcliffe was installed.
