Gee, John, I was out there three weeks ago....I too think that a four-wheel-drive is needed to get to most of the scenic spots. Hiking is fine, and I did a few in and around the campground at Borrego Springs, Palm Canyon - Nice campground, by the way, hot water, showers, pretty quiet in the back section, quite cold and it rained most of the first afternoon. Nice but small Park Information center. Town of Borrego Springs is a mixed bag - Lots of Harley riders on the weekend, hanging out at Carlee's, a rude French restaurant operation, a pretty good and almost unfindable coffee shop, Kendall's, six (yes, six) churches that I counted (there may be more) in a town of about 1000 mostly very nice people,,,,,,The only problem is the drive in on the road from Temecula, which is tedious.

A week ago today I was in Borrego Springs...driving my Nissan Altima, but not off road. The Salton Sea has many migrating shorebirds at this time of year. The drive from there to Borrego Springs, via Badlands, was breathtaking. That faux French Restaurant...give me a break. The ice cream place (center of the social swirl) was fun. Thanks for your posting.

Go to Borrego Springs NOW through March and see the glorious wildflowers. Unbelievable and well worth the trek. Go to the Visitor Center in Borrego Springs. When you arrive in the parking lot, you won't see a building, because it's underground. Take the walkway through the cactus/succulent garden, and you will find the CA State Park Visitor Center. Ask to see the 10 minute movie. It shows the park in each season, and is a beautiful thing to see. Borrego Springs is a tiny town, no stoplights, clean, and there's good food and friendly people. As Huell Howser would say, "This is a California treasure".

79P: I should have mentioned the annual wildflower show! Another big plus for this park. Thanks.

Are there flowers there now? You say in your piece there were none! When is the (usually) good time for the annual wildflower show?

FB Night: google it, as it varies. Generally, flower time is early spring, right after the rain. A good time for viewing will be coming up fairly soon, I THINK. I also think I too will check it and maybe drive down there. Been quite a while.

Thanks. ...I thought yours was a recent report. :) Here's a site for wildflower reports (http://www.desertusa.com/wildflo/ca.html) - perhaps someone will have more specific info.
