344 - yes! That grassy field and the beach below was my playground as a child. All the neighborhood kids played there. It was the best! Pretty darn good now too. I'm lucky enough to be back in my Mesa childhood home and enjoy the park daily.

RIP Faye Azbell, who lived on the park and was one of the grass rooters who preserved it. She would walk the park every morning in white gloves and hat and referred to it as her yard!

Most people don't know that before 1967 it was just a grassy field with no lights, fences, benches or anything. When condos were being considered being built, a grass roots group got enough signatures to put its purchase by the city on the ballot. The people of the city voted resoundingly yes, buy the land and make a park. The rest is history, to our enjoyment.

great photos! thanks for the article. does anyone know if there are any plans for putting in a walkway where the lawn has become a dirt path since the pavement path was destroyed from the cliff collapse several years ago? also will the lookout point that's been fenced off since then ever be reopened?

It is the best place to watch: dogs, sunrise, people, picnic, surf and just enjoy on a sunny day. We get there every morning at around 6 am and walk or dogs the whole park and down to Leadbetter Beach and back.
