Somehow the whole concept of this place including its name, decor and attitude turns me off totally. Walked in and walked out.

The downtown location has been hit or miss for us. Sometimes it's quite tasty, sometimes quite dry and over-done or missing something.

I recommend their sourdough, on sandwiches, if honey wheat isn't your thing. My usual order is the half-and-half with BLTA on sourdough and an ahi salad. Can't be beat... great price, great food. I agree with other commenters that quality can vary from day to day, but I've never had what I'd call a low-quality meal there. I think the variation has a lot to do with things being local and made in-house rather than supplied wholly by restaurant supply companies as at chain restaurants...

Doesn't seem like they will be able to stay in business if you buy a cup of coffee in the morning and wander back in all day long for refills. I guess there's only a few customers that claim that benefit....

The company that makes those informative receipts possible is a home-grown Santa Barbara company, SmartReceipt! They are working with several restaurants around the state (and in other places, too). Very useful information.

Not sure junk science nutritional information is "very useful". It is a gimmick and that is one more reason this place turns me off. Put this into the same category as horoscopes and fortune cookies, but please do not rely on that for nutritional science. If you eat a burger, it is good to know you have just swallowed half your daily calories, whether it is natural or organic or not.

Caloric and fat value information isn't junk science. It's a useful tool for people who don't have a lot of nutritional background or knowledge and it's great for those in the population who have issues like diabetes and are new to controlling carbs and portions. Don't knock it just because you don't want to use it. It's useful to many people.

I really like Silvergreens in SB for a variety of reasons, mainly because they have OPTIONS: healthy choices (along with some not-so-healthy); generally fast service; tipping is not obligatory; the receipt is useful - it has not only nutritional info but other interesting tidbits, including discounts for a return visit; it has an open environment with lots of windows; it's a great place to people watch as there are all kinds that eat and walk by there; and the staff is very nice and friendly. It's reasonably priced for most items and even cheap for some, especially if you have an Axxess card. The parking can be tough and true, it could be more consistent with the quality. Like a previous commenter, I have never had a bad meal there but I have had a few average meals and a lot of good lunches at Silvergreens. I hope they stay put at that location.

are they a chain? I like that caloric count on the receipt, but is the info available before you make your order? ms lj: I know just what you mean about that bun. I suffered the same fate at a Chico restaurant, ended up with the roof of my mouth torn up. Just toasted too long, and too big. I always joke about needing a hinge in my jaw, like a snake.

Agree, calorie count info more useful before you order than after. But even McDonald's has been providing this information before you buy for decades. Not sure why this is value added to get it on your receipt after you made your purchase. If one is diabetic, one had better learn the rules of that game well before going into any restaurant. "Green" in anything these days means two things: higher prices and and excuses for indifferent, inconsistent quality. Sorry.

Refilling coffee all day, repeatedly leaving and coming back, is clearly abuse of a generous policy. I don't know if Silvergreen's states that it's same visit only, but either way I would strongly encourage supporters of this restaurant and its spectacular, local coffee purveyor, Green Star, to do the right thing and support both businesses by paying the two bucks or whatever per visit.

I'm trying to figure out the relationship between the info about calories, fat, fiber, and protein on that receipt, and horoscopes or fortune cookies. Ah, I have it: there actually isn't one.

I like onions on my hamburger and would eat there more often if they didn't charge extra for them.

They actually have all the caloric content on their menus so you *can* actually take that into consideration before you order and not just see it after on your receipt.

Have you guys all seen the new seasonal dinner menu? Funny I'm on this big Silvergreens kick right now..my kids go to St. Raph in Goleta and these guys do their school lunches. They rock it...Me and the Mrs. just stopped by Monday night and they have a new dinner menu out, very very tasty. I just love the whole concept of this joint.
