Horrible parking lot, but then, I'll do almost anything for great taquitos! Thank you for the introduction, Ms. Lemonjelly,

Thanks! That's pretty far for me, but I love taquitos too. There used to be a small place that did them great (and inexpensive) across from the airport, on Fairview. The best option I've found in Goleta is Cal Taco; they're pretty good, but limited in choice.

I remember going to Tolteca on Haley street when I was a kid and getting taquitos with red sauce........ It was my favorite place to go out to for what seemed like forever. 10 for a dollar, that should give a timeline. I'm going to have to adventure to downtown to give these a try!

We went there last week. We each ordered the Surtido (one of each of six types) for $6. Ground beef, shredded beef, chicken, bean, potato, and rajas (pepper). We got all the toppings, including cabbage, onion, tomato, lime, cheese, sour cream, and guacamole. You have to pay an extra $0.50 if you want cheese, sour cream, or guac. I was disappointed at the amount of sour cream and guacamole that we got. About a tablespoon of each. I didn't really understand the cabbage, onion, and tomato toppings, as everyone I know eats taquitos with their fingers, and all the topping fall off when you pick them up. I would recommend not getting any "dry" toppings, unless you want to eat them like a side salad (with no dressing). (continued)

As far as the taquitos go, the are, well, taquitos. There really isn't much difference between the Cadillac of taquitos and the ones you buy frozen in the store. If you buy the surtido you get them for $1.00 each, which is OK, I guess, but each taquito is pretty small. Our favorites were the shredded beef and the rajas. The potato was very bland, but was the one with the best texture. The chicken was very dry. The bean tasted funny. The ground beef was OK. The parking is horrible...there was one spot open and we were the only people there...Mel's customers take up all the spots. The restaurant was freezing and the fireplace does nothing to warm it up. If these people do not expand their menu I predict they won't last long...I know the guy who had a restaurant there for 15 years and he says it is a horrible location.

The best part of our visit to Tepayec Taquitos was the service. The people working there were extremely friendly. The taquitos were nothing special. They were taquitos. Great finger food. Great bar food. They better get together with Mels to sell some taquitos or else this place will go out of business soon. Horrible location. And you pronounce it te-pay-YAK.

nothing special, and should have looked at the to-go box before i left. No cabbage, only lettuce, no lime, no salsa...and I paid for extra cheese and got NONE!, it was not even that busy. Probably wont go back.

The first time I had this style of taquitos, they were called Flautas. "flutes". How/when did these fried tubes become "taquitos"? Anyone have info? I understood 'taquitos' to be the small 4" double-corn tortilla taco served at taquerias and taco trucks. Can anyone clear up the nomenclature? (I love this stuff--and the food too.)

Flauta vs. taquito in most areas is determined by flour vs corn tortillas. Folks in some regions say it's a matter of size. Easy to Google

La Tolteca on Haley was the very, very best (with the red sauce which made them very hot)...

As far as calories go for taquitos...not good. If you add cheese, sour cream, and guacamole, you are looking at about 350 calories each. That plate of six with all the toppings is well over 1500 calories.

Thank you 139274. I always wonder when folks gush about a new plate, especially with this fare, if they know what they're doing to themselves.

Tiny but tasty - I spent $12 and left hungry (including a drink) For the price they should offer better bulk deals. Perhaps a 6-pack of any style for $6 and a 12-pack for $10? They really are tiny. I liked the Rajas best. For comparison Rudy's taquitos are approx. twice the size, come with 3x the guac (included) and cost about $3.50 for two of them. Overall a much better deal and equally tasty.
