This is the herd of zebras maintained by the Hearst Ranch. Recently three escaped, and apparently spooked some horses that belong to a neighboring rancher. They get along fine with cattle, but not with horses. I suspect there is a long history of bad feelings between these people that has not been mentioned in the news reports we have been seeing.

What is the matter with people. Issues with neighbors can be very frustrating but killing the Zebras was rotten and a terrible thing to do. I don't care what their so called rights are, these people should be held accountable and shunned by reasonable people. I hope I never run into them personally. The whole idea make me furious.

This is indeed a sad story, however, your photos are very cool...I really like the second, more close up shot...they're beautiful creatures, thanks for sharing the story and photographs.

Great pics, thank you for sharing. It appears in yor photo's that all the animals got along. Im sure the painiful branding of cattle, the roundup, as well as the shot gun being discharged to kill the zebra's had no frightening affect on his herds? C'mon now... David Fisclini is still a coward! A phone call would have been very effective,

Capt Haley, gets it. Zebras are extremely aggressive, wild animals - not ponies w stripes. They are strong and, can I say it gain, wild animals. That's why they are not used as riding or driving animals (except as curiousities) They can and will kill domestic horses. Ranchers have very long established rules and agreements concerning any aggressive animals, your rules in town are not their rules.

They are wild, but they are not usually aggressive, actually. He's actually quite wrong about that. When spooked, agitated or under-exercised they can be dangerous. But they are not known for being aggressive otherwise. Face it, this was a case of extreme prejudice that arose from bad blood between neighbors and a a guy who decided shooting three innocent animals was his right regardless of what was actually going on.

..bottom line is; Hearst caused the problem, yet he shifts blame to others. How conveeeeenient.

Zebras and cows get along great until a zebra tries to mount a cow!

Those blaming Hearst obviously have a grudge against him, or his wealth. He hasn't shifted the blame to anyone. As stated by another reader, perhaps on the other Ed page relating to this story, these Zebras have been around a lot longer than he has. Regardless of who holds or accepts blame for their escape, it was a cowardly, cruel, and inhumane act to shoot them. That should be the issue here. Such ignorance is truly despicable

Beautiful photos! The stripes on the zebras are striking and show off nicely in these black and white images. It's a pleasure to see these "exotic" animals along our coastline. Whatever the controversy between neighbors, it's sad to see the zebras having to pay the price. Mr. Hearst has said, let's drop the controversy and figure how to get along going forward. That sounds like the sane person to me.

Hearst did not shift blame. OTOH, some refuse to apply any blame to those who actually pull the trigger to kill animals.

There has been cross-breeding between horses and zebras. A zeony I saw years ago was the result of a pony and zebra breeding. I can imagine a bad result if the horses and zebras were in a small corral together, it can get bad between crowded horses. But in a big pasture I don't understand the problem. Apparently, two different ranchers shot the zebras, 2 on 1 ranch and 1 on the other.

Seedlady, funny, I thought the bottom line was that whatever happened, the ranchers CALLED THE TAXIDERMIST after shooting someone else's animals so they could get a nice rug. I don't get it. His animals were *shot*, and he's accused of shifting blame? Geez, I remember when the one woman's cows used to get loose (routinely...) & no one ever tried to shoot them... Glad I grew up elsewhere sometimes (then I remember the blizzards).

It's a new day, and zebras still suck. I'm thinking of going on a safari so I can shoot one myself.
