i'm afraid i would feel like a skinned cat after paying those prices! but for those of you who can pay 2.50 for a glass of water; local, fizzy or flat, rock on!

Thanks for the report. Though it takes any interest I might have had in that place away, it's good to know about.

Thanks for the great review! I drive past 1134 Chapala every Sunday after coffee at Peets, and I've never see this place. I'm not a great fan of eggs for breakfast, but your description of the Cobb salad has make me very hungry! I will definitely try the Hungry cat.

You get a free dose of attitude at Hungry Cat too. Saves a trip to LA to get insulted by a restaurant. Bring lots of cash as they have nose bleed prices to go with their turned up noses when you walk in. Wear your Ambercromie and Fitch best or don't show your face.

Lemonjelly, I see what you mean by saying $5 is the difference between good and great. I don't mind spending $10 at the Breakwater for breakfast, but for some reason $14 sounds crazy. So, I guess I'll have to visit the Cat to confirm. Btw, if you need another person to join you in reviews I am available. Edhat pays the tab, right?

Hubby and I have had great drinks and one dinner at Hungry Cat but this write up about brunch makes me open my mind about the place even more. YES, it's "trendy" but if you plan on paying your check, who cares what label you're wearing? As long as you and your clothes are clean you will be served. Don't arrive with that chip on your shoulder and you'll have a nice time. Yes the menu (for dinner) isn't regular/conservative/Italian/sushi/etc. It took us a few minutes and questions to the wait person to figure out. Thanks, LJ, for this column today. This place, if a patron is in the mood for something different and out of the norm, seems to truly deliver. I had no idea about breakfast/brunch there. I can't remember the last time I went to a restaurant for brunch. (OK maybe for Easter formal, about 6 years ago.) We go out for dinner often. "Out for dinner" is in our budget - now I think I'll add one brunch per year to the budget and try HC. Sounds great. For people that won't pay for water... well? We Brita at home and that costs $$$. Why shouldn't the restaurant filter too?

Read the comments on Santa Barbara Dining blog for Hungry Cat with too many reports of bad attitude to conclude this is only the customers fault.

Sure looks good, Lemonjelly. Thanks for this. Might re-think our Sunday staple, Jeanine's for breakfast after reading this. @Racergirl, I know what you mean about brunch vs dinner. But there's something so satisfying and relaxing about brunch that we sort of make it a priority to go every Sat or Sunday and forgo dinner out instead. I feel like I'm more relaxed and we "linger" a bit longer eating our meal. I dunno, maybe it's just me but there's something sooo relaxing about brunch out on the weekends.

Thanks Ms Lemonjelly, the Hungry Cat is a gem. I have to know what is on the cheese plate? I can see the cheeses and what looks like marcona almonds, but what is that in the bottom right corner of the photo/plate?

Aquaholic - it's honeycomb. A great complement to the blue cheese. I didn't even like blue cheese until I attended a cheese and honey tasting a couple years back at C'est Cheese . Blew my mind. Glad you asked! Dan - edhat does not pick up the tab. Nice comments from Z28 and Native1, too. Brunch is one of those dreamy mellow meals. "Lingering" is just one of the unlisted courses on the menu. For what it's worth, the breakfast spot my friend originally spoke of was Tupelo Junction. :)

Mmmmm, it's hard to beat brunch at Tupelo, if you ask me...also love the decadent fare at Sly's in Carp is topnotch, and Jeannine's is always great, too...will have to broaden my options with a trip to Hungry Cat, sounds great!

My grandfather used to make cheese & honey sandwiches. I do too, occasionally. I thought it was a family quirk of his.

LJ, what makes this 'brunch' as opposed to breakfast? Timing? Just my curiosity speaking.

Want true comfort food on a rainy cold night in SB? Try their clams and chorizo stew .... amazing blend of flavors. Wamrs the bones, tantalizes the pallet. And I will take one hungry cat breakfast over two Cajun Kitchen breakfasts any day. Quality vs. quantity.
