I'm glad you enjoyed it. I did grow up in Carp and this place is filthy and nasty. I love that you're willing to try anyplace, but I'd never be able to recommend it myself.

But how did everything taste? Was the cut/quality of the meat better than you'd find in Albertson's? Better than you could do at home on your own grill? How did those croutons taste??? (I love croutons.) One of the reasons the idea behind this place hasn't appealed to me, and why I haven't been, is that I love to grill. I have a higher-end BBQ that Mr. Racer and I invested in because I love to grill so much. So why would I pay $20 for a chunk of meat at a restaurant - AND have to do all the work on someone else's grill I'm unfamiliar with? I don't "get" it. But thanks for your write up today! I'm sure if a friend suggested meeting there I'd go but it doesn't top my to-do list.

I am also willing to learn more about grilling and BBQing and recognize that I save money if I buy my own steaks and do it at home. The last time I went there I got some good tips from another customer I did not even know, yet he was friendly and informative. I don't find the place to be filthy and nasty, it just has a more classic atmosphere. I'm not a big fan of the palms, but I know people who are. I just thought only having negative comments so far doesn't do the palms justice. I am sure to return a handful of times in the extended future.

Love the Palms and always have. It is exactly what it has always been. If has history and charm. If you are looking for froo-froo look elsewhere.

I did not know it was DIY. The first and only time I went there, I stared at the menu not believing how CHEAP the steak was. I ordered and the server brought a raw hunk o' meat to me. Okaaaaaaaaaaay.

Racer girl wondered why she'd pay $20.00 for a hunk of meat she'd have to grill herself. Where are you talking about? Is there a resturant with $20 steaks you have to cook? The Palms is a clean, family oriented resturant, owned by the same family for many years and I've had four generations of my gang go there together. We love it. Grilling means your meat comes out exactly as you want it. The staff will do it for you if you ask. Salad bar is great, croutons are worth going for, help yourself to all the bread, potatoes and beans you want. Such a deal!!

Racergirl, maybe you could show them a thing or two down at the Palms. Merry Christmas!

Ms. lemonjelly, some details: are you able to pick out your steak? Are they cut thick enough to your liking? Is there a choice of cut thickness? That would appeal to me. The marbling looks good from your photo, but would it be pot luck? Are the Palms particularly noted for good quality meat?

811 I WAS talking about the Palms. From LJ's pic showing the menu, filet mignon is $16. After tax and tip I think my "rounding up" to $20 is justified. Walking up to an unfamiliar grill means to me that I have no idea what the grill's characteristics are, and therefore I have zero guarantee of how my steak is cooked. I'll take my $20 to a worthy chef here in town (Square One recently was wonderful) and let them do all the work. For $10 I'll buy filet at Albertsons and do it myself if I feel like saving some dough. I'm not hating on your choice of restaurant, I'm just saying it doesn't sound like something I'd enjoy, and why.

Since yer sitting right there with the meat the entire time...I suspect you have a modicum of control regarding the meat's outcome? I've never been to The Palms but my old dog used to love walking by. Scored some leftovers on a few occassions, which he enjoyed :-)

The Palms is just fun. The meat is just fair quality -- but the price is just, considering all the sides, all you can eat. And let me join my voice to the others who have said it: those croutons cannot be beat anywhere!

I like LJ's column, but just wish she would talk a little bit more about if the food is actually good. This is just a" look at what I ate blog," which is ok I guess, but it would be nice to know if "what I ate" is worth your readers time. I'm willing to bet LJ has a good pallete, take a stand tell us how it tastes! Thanks

I'm not an expert, just a food fan. Think of the food photo contribution in the same way that other edhat people post photos of sunsets. I'm not aspiring to much more! Thanks for looking.
