very cute. Our puppy also was an excessive play biter. Our son was afraid of him. Don't know exactly what worked but.... We found other puppys for him to play with. They taught each other how hard to bite. We screamed every time he bit us and acted very wounded and then ignored him. He got older

Thanks for your story - it gives me hope! Same thing here - my son wore rain boots for weeks to prevent bloody ankles. It has actually been almost two months and a puppy class since we got her (and since I sent in the posting), and she has improved a lot, but she still uses her teeth on everyone (not aggressively, but playfully). Now that she's gotten her last vax, I will look for a dog park where she can learn (hopefully) from other dogs...

When play biting would happen with our puppies we would yelp like their litter mates would do if bit and walk away. This worked well.

Very cute. Yes, yelling loudly gets the message across. We have an 18 month old " puppy" and when she is excited she will bite some people. Not always and not everyone. They do get older and learn!!

Two local dog parks that are fenced: Kiwanis Meadows at Tucker's Grove County Park, open daily until sunset; Tabano Hollow at Tabano Way/University Drive, daily from 8-10 and 3-sunset.

As a Shepherd owner, they are typically very mouthy as youngsters. The other commenters are correct in voicing a loud "ouch" just like another would yelp. Also, be ready to give her something appropriate to bite (dog toy) instead of your hand (leg, etc.). Be consistent, don't let her bite playfully one time and then get mad the next she bites. Never let her play bite, or jump on you - just doesn't work with a big dog. In my experience, the female dogs are less mouthy than male dogs, so there's hope!

Good looking dog! Follow CEES advice and you will make through the puppy days, which unfortunately can last until they are two with some breeds.

Thanks everyone! Lots of good advice. Took her for the first time to the dog parks - there's a nice one in Buellton, BTW. The loud yelping doesn't faze her. A spray bottle has shown that she actually can control herself - but now only when she sees the bottle! Thank you CEES - very useful info. Hopefully, with all this great input, I will to survive the puppy days...but two years...!?

Try teaching her something in place of the play-biting, and then reward, reward, reward when she gets it right. The play-biting could be in fun, but it could turn dangerous at the wrong time, and as she gets older and larger. Good luck. She's adorable.
