We visited friends in Florida last year. We will not go back. The traffic is horrendous and except for the beaches themselves, it is an ugly place, filled with cheap mini malls. Snowbirds from the northeast are generally not nice people but fortunately for others, they do like to hide behind their walled enclaves. The place has absolutely no vibe or class. We did like Captiva Island but if you didn't get there by 9:02 a.m., you were out of luck for a parking space. Fortunately, we got there at 9:01. I can't imagine anyone from California enjoying Florida. Maybe we missed the good places but what we saw and experienced, from Jacksonville to Clearwater to Estero had no ambiance and seemed dated (70s schlock.)

It's too flat - other than the shadow of the sun or GPS technology, I get lost easily there since there's no mountain landmarks. A power plant stack is a poor substitute for the Santa Ynez mountain range.

Some have missed the good places, for sure. Don't know about the Panhandle, but circling the lower portion of the state was interesting and good viewing in many places. Hey, it ain't CA, but where is?

23P: I checked the map and found that you and I were definitely on a different page, Florida-speaking. I enjoyed the eastern and southern portions, you didn't like the north and northwest, and I'll take your word for it: I got the better parts. And couldn't find Estero on the map. I'll shut up about it after St. Petersburg and Tampa next time. --mcc
