Thank you for highlighting our Back Yard. Although people with dogs do use the area, this is a learning environment for students and a research area. The oak woodland is home to many species of nesting birds, the creek is home to endangered steel head trout, and the Back Yard is a place where children can reconnect to the natural world. School groups investigate the living organisms in the creek and the compost area, activities which foster wonder and curiosity about the unplugged world of nature. Families and young children can explore, imagine, and create in a natural setting where they learn through nature. Building forts, making mud pies, racing boats ...activities that were once considered the very heart of childhood don't exist for most children. The Museum is nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards. We want children to love nature because they KNOW it. Family Nature Day is every 3rd Sunday (free) and the Back Yard has even more activities. A plea to the dog walkers: Please keep your pet on a leash and pick up after your pet. Doggie land mines are a mess!
