I miss Jimmy's. Willie and Esther running the bar side. Willie's knowledge of music and the tunes he played. Tommy the sweetest man, and chef of a gigantic menu. Esther, who can tell a joke better than her? Pearl keeping everyone happy on the dining room side. In the '80s Nuey and her Mahjong pals starting their game in the back room later in the evening and into the morning. And many more memories best kept secret. Tommy telling stories of sitting on the bar stool as a child while his father tended bar............ I MISS JIMMY'S

In the late 1950s, for about a year and a half, Jimmy's Oriental Gardens was "officially" closed due to the Nature Conservancy beating the elder man and threatening his wife if they did not stop selling plants, one the men being Richard Pough, founder of theNature Conservancy, by their descriptions to me that morning. But!! The local people went to their back door after walking down the then alley from De La Guerra. Much loved people and beautiful flowers deserved and received much continued business in Santa Barbara.

And by-the-by....Jimmy was forced to relocate because of his ethnicity... SB was racially divided back then with strict "lines" one could not cross without being arrested. When the story is told here,it is romanticized, but back then...one could be easily killed [any non-white] without repercussion. I am the TRUE SB historian.
