Maybe the poor woman had never flown before. I haven't been on a plane in 20 years, I'd have NO idea what to do. Sometimes we need to be more compassionate, maybe help the person to bag her bottles, etc.

Flustered, embarrassed and confused, clearly this poor woman needed help and not hostile attitudes heating and exacerbating the situation. When one sees a person in this condition the humane thing to do is try to calm them down. Draw them to one side, and quietly and calmly help them to collect their thoughts and possessions. Iignore the rest of the cattle snorting and grunting their irritation. You will feel better and hopefully so will the confused individual. Believe me the custom blokes will appreciate the co-operation too.

I'm guessing that if you had left on time and weren't in a hurry, then all would have been fine. Anything can happen at an airport, so next time be sure to leave a bit earlier. Let's try to not blame our own life issues on someone else. And, like 787 and 792 say, why not help the woman? If everyone stopped thinking about themselves for a minute, the planet would be a happier place!

... except that at SBA they don't open the gates for your flight until about half and hour before departure, so it doesn't really matter how early you get there. Also, there are signs everywhere explaining how security works, so saying you haven't flown in a while is no excuse unless you are also illiterate.

107797P 787 and 792. In the world we now live in it is refreshing to know good Samaritans still exist and are still ready to step out of the "ME" box. A "seasoned traveller" would know to arrive with time to spare. Armed with a book i always schedule one comfortable 30 minutes ahead.

Just mention descretely that the woman told you that she has a bomb in her bag. The TSA will quickly mover her out of line and you will not be inconvenienced by a lengthy delay.

What is actually gained by the no shoe, no liquid shuffle? Security theatre.

I never bag my liquids. Sometimes they find them and take them away, but usually they don't, and it is just more efficient not to go to the effort. I don't like the feeling of willingly doing something something so irrelevant to security.

here's a tip...give $20 to the baggage guys at the curb at LAX and they'll whisk you right past the security line to your gate (of course the tsa chicks get a cut). like most security theater type laws, they only really impact the law abiding...bad guys always find a way...

She probably had to pay attention to learn how to use the seat belt too. "Please make sure your seatbelt is securely fastened at this time. To fasten, insert the loose metal buckle into the holder. Tighten so it fits firmly around your waist. To fasten, pull the loose belt." "Wait, wait, show me again, I didn't get that part."

Not advisable, but "frustration in line" would end. New frustrations would take their place. There could be another long line at booking at the jail. Terrorist threats come with heavy bails. The irritating lady would become the farthest thing from your mind. Present problem solved and replaced. Balance in the universe restored.

Actually, it is recommended by the airlines that for domestic flights you arrive at the terminal 2 hours BEFORE the SCHEDULED DEPARTURE time. 3 hours before for international flights. Now you know why! Generally you don't need that much time @ SBA, BUT you never know when you'll be behind the UCSB Water Polo Team or a Senior 1st timer.

True story: I was at SBA a couple of years ago and I only had one "liquid" carryon item. It was sample of a thick moisturizer and when the security lady asked me, "Is this lip gloss??" I innocently blurted out, "No, it's more like a balm." Not my finest moment, people.

Airport "Security" is a joke. I look at some of the "guards" on my travels and they seem to be America's unemployable.... A few years ago they confiscated my unopened originally sealed toothpaste because it was a bigger size than allowed.... As far as people in line.... most do the best they can.... however, quite often that leaves a lot to be desired... sigh....
