Ha, fact check please..... dogs must be on-leash at all times. I know, I have been ticketed multiple times at butterfly.

Good to hear they're ticketing. I wish the City would do the same on Leadbetter --- and, especially, the breakwater! Why bother to have laws if there allowed (and it sometimes seems) encouraged to be broken!

Why bothers to have laws?

Because there can't be a person encforcing/babysitting the beach all day long. It is dependent on citizen compliance and responsibility. Do you drive over 65 at any time, ever? Would you expect to be ticketed automatically every single time? Same deal at the beach. When an code enforcement officer is there, they do ticket.

Several comments about Butterfly Beach:

1) Dogs must be on leash. I think the fine is upward of $150. That would would easily pay for brunch for the owner and the dog at the Biltmore.

2) Butterfly Beach is overseen by the County Parks Department. It is called a "Community Beach" because there are no bathrooms or paved parking. It is a beach intended for a "short stay," or for those who are within walking distance. Should you or the dog have to pee, go elsewhere.

3) The homeowners across the street from the beach, including Ty Warner, actually own the sand to the mean high tide line; so careful if you are setting up a wedding, you could be asked to leave thier property.

4) There is NO alcohol on BB. Not even a sunset glass of wine. Again the fines are pretty steep, so not worth the risk. The Sheriff monitors this beach, under the watchful eye of the homeowners.

5) You have a fact-checker in Montecito. You should call her from time to time. ;-)

FYI: Butterfly Beach is at the end of Channel Drive NOT Olive Mill Road per your article "Here are our top reasons for making the jaunt down to the end of Olive Mill Road". If you take the jaunt down O.M.R. you end up at Coast Village Rd.

who remembers when monarch butterflies swarmed in trees now gone to make way for homes across the street?

@104466 - I remember! That's why it was called Butterfly Lane, Butterfly Beach: there used to be an amazing number of monarchs there. Beautiful and peaceful. I haven't even bothered to make special trips the last couple of years, so few there have been.

I believe part of the problem was also because the Music Acad. of the West cut down quite a few trees. Now, you can't see many more butterflies than are drawn on the wall.

---As for driving over the speed limit, I see many more unleashed dogs/per capita walking than I do vehicles speeding. Curious, I'll do an edhat type count at several times this week. I think the high time for dogs is later in the afternoon?

It really is a peaceful and beautiful place ... it is the turn-around point for our nice long run starting at Garden St.
