I too go nuts when people say Sierras. Sometimes I correct them, and sometimes I let it go. Thanks for pointing that out.

One thing, east of Big Pine not Lone Pine is where you will find the Bristle Cone Forest. And just west of Lone Pine (Whitney Portal Road to Movie Road) is where you will find the Alabama Hills

What IS supposedly great about Whoa Nellie Deli if they prepackage their sandwiches? I'd heard it was some sort of foodie's destination...doesn't sound like it.

The Whoa Nellie Deli has a great "non packaged" menu. The last time I stopped there my companion and I split an order of delicious Jambalaya. I understand the buffalo meat loaf is great. Very informal atmosphere (order at the counter and sit in standard diner tables) but the view of Mono Lake through the windows or from the patio is spectacular, particularly at sunset. The "Big Pine" at the turnoff to the Bristlecones is actually a sequoia, reputed to have been planted by or in honor of Teddy Roosevelt upon the opening of the highway.

Some of the bristlecones are much older than Jesus. The Santorini volcano in 1628 B.C. made a world-wide ash cloud that lowered temperatures for a couple of years. Tree rings of older pines show minimal growth at this date. They also accurately date historical eruptions of Vesuvius and Etna as well as Tambura and Krakatoa more recently.

We go to Lone Pine every year for the Time Trials. Lately we've been thinking of making it a longer (than the usual weekend) vacation and seeing some sights. Recently the Methuselah tree was a clue on Jeopardy and I briefly looked into it's location, kinda near Lone Pine! Cool write-up McSeas! Thanks. Link removed because it was broken.

It looks like Z28Racergirls link got combined with the "57% of comments...." link that's usually at the bottom of the comments thread.
