Placerville wasn't so funny when it was named Hangtown, after its prevailing sense of justice.

I should eat breakfast out more. Any place locally to get a good Hangtown Fry?

Placerville is also famed for its rattlesnakes, huge ones, and it has a full time service devoted to humanely removing snakes from houses and businesses.

Nice article. We're reading edhat from Placerville as we visit friends for the long weekend. Having lived in P'ville for a few years until recently returning to the central coast, it was interesting to get a visitor's (and commenter's) take on the town. BTW, Old Hangtown got its name after 3 or 4 hangings back in the gold days. But, the name stuck. When visiting, stop by the Cosmic Cafe, a 60's-style coffee shop built over the entrance to a mine shaft, right on the main street (Broadway). Seating is available in the mine area; very pleasent. Nothing beats the drive to Tahoe, especially when on a motocycle.
